On Thursday (27), a police operation was launched in the cities of
Florianópolis, Itajaí and Navegantes in the state of Santa Catarina,
against the Popular Unity for Socialism (UP) and the Movement for
Struggle in Neighborhoods, Villages and Slums (MLB), a movement that
works in the fight for housing. ---- The state headquarters of UP was
invaded and vandalized by police forces. In addition, activists linked
to MLB and UP in different cities had personal items seized. The action
involved personnel from the Civil Police and Military Police of Santa
Catarina.
To date, the lawyers have not had full access to the process that
originated the action, which is being processed under judicial secrecy.
However, several pieces of information were exclusively released by
Jornal Razão, a media outlet linked to the far-right government of
Jorginho Mello (PL), which received over 200,000 reais in public funds
from the state this year alone.
It is necessary to state clearly: this is an act of political
persecution and an attempt at censorship against social struggles,
against the right to association, expression, and political
organization. The responsibility lies with the Chief of Police of Santa
Catarina, Ulisses Gabriel; Judge Flavio Henrique Seviero, of the 2nd
Civil Court of the District of Blumenau; and ultimately, with the
Bolsonaro-supporting governor Jorginho Mello (PL). Is this the freedom
that the far-right pretends to defend?
We denounce the repressive advances of Governor Jorginho and declare
ourselves alert in solidarity with the UP, the MLB, and all popular
movements in our state.
