Dear Friends,
With the year nearing its end and the holiday season approaching, the second Trump administration continues to ramp up repression and shred the social safety net (such as it is). Over the past few months, ICE, Customs and Border Patrol, and other federal agencies have continued to target immigrants for detention and deportation, universities and other institutions have continued to cave to Trump’s demands for ideological conformity, and the neediest households have watched as their Medicaid subsidies hang in the balance. Antifa—which is not a structured organization but a political culture—is in the crosshairs along with a broad swath of left organizations. Meanwhile, given the opportunity to stand up to the far-right political machine, congressional Democrats—the alleged opposition party—have instead stood down. Repeatedly.
But this is only one side of the picture. Washington’s neofascist agenda is prompting a renaissance of grassroots direct action: spontaneous, non-hierarchical, and community based. Activists are bird-dogging ICE agents, blockading them when they harass and raid immigrant worker gatherings. Rallies and demos in support of Palestine and Palestinian immigrants are returning, following months in which repression on college campuses appeared to have dampened the movement. Whereas the early months of Trump 2.0 seemed to provoke mainly tame, sign-waving gatherings in safe locations and the converted seemed content to preach to each other, the urgency of defiance at last seems to be taking hold.
Much more remains to be done, but the past several months have revealed, again, that anarchist organizing has far more power to inspire resistance and create openings for effective action than does organizing sanctioned by the State.
Communications and media work is an essential part of struggle and social change. We’re happy to announce the opening of the 2025-2026 application period for the Jen Angel Anarchist Media Grants. The program, which Agency sponsors together with the Institute for Anarchist Studies (IAS), supports independent media projects reflecting the core tenets of anarchism that Jen’s life and work exemplified: autonomy, mutual aid, voluntary association, and direct action. The application period closes on March 2, 2026. Information on how to apply is available here. We also co-sponsor the Horizons Grant with IAS. More on that here.
Underneath the repression and lies, a politics rooted in autonomy, solidarity, and resistance is strong and growing. The following recent articles and commentaries on our website underscore the challenges we face and the importance of anarchist organizing.
