Independent journalism matters now more than ever. Support THE CITY's end of year campaign today.

Dear New Yorkers,

New York State on Tuesday approved its energy-needs roadmap for the next decade and a half — but city officials countered that it may complicate the city’s own green goals.

Even while calling for expanded renewable energy from solar and wind, the plan specifies keeping fossil fuels in the mix and does not line up with the state’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act of 2019, which requires cutting carbon emissions and shifting to clean energy.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has recently said she is willing to delay those mandates while embracing an “all of the above” approach to energy, including continued reliance on natural gas or new forms of nuclear energy in order to meet the growing need for electricity.

But city officials with the Mayor’s Office of Climate and Environmental Justice warned that the state’s  plan puts New York City “on the path of delayed action” and threatens to undermine emissions goals in the five boroughs.
