And scheduling issues were at the heart of the biggest worker protection settlement in New York City history, announced yesterday. Starbucks agreed to pay $35.5 million to approximately 15,000 people who were employed at one of more than 300 New York City locations from July 4, 2021 until July 7, 2024.
It was a major victory for those workers. But many more are still fighting, including Park Slope Starbucks Workers who got a visit on the picket line from Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
For the first time, State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli will face challengers in his reelection bid. The manager of the state’s massive pension fund faces candidates who say he should be doing more with that money to alleviate the affordability crisis in New York. THE CITY spoke to all three candidates.
On this week’s FAQ NYC podcast, the gang discusses a strange historic snafu: It turns out that the count of our mayors has been off by one, dating back to when the city had a population of just 2,500 — meaning Mayor-elect Mamdani will be New York’s 112th mayor, though still the 111th person to serve. HIV diagnoses increased across New York City in 2024, part of a multi-year surge after years of decline. The spike comes as the Trump administration has moved to cut federal funding to test, treat and prevent the disease.
Last year, 1,791 people were newly-diagnosed with HIV, a 5.4% increase compared to 2023, according to a new report from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
Dr. Michelle Morse, the city’s acting health commissioner, announced Monday – World AIDS Day – that although the city had made “immense progress” towards ending the HIV epidemic since 2000, the new diagnoses threaten that.
“This progress has stalled as new diagnoses have increased or remained stable for the fourth year in a row and critical federal funding for ending the epidemic is in jeopardy,” she said.
President Donald Trump's administration has proposed eliminating the entire Centers for Disease Control Division of HIV Prevention and cutting hundreds of millions of funding, including $41 million just for the city’s health department.
