The recent adoption of a law originating from the National Rally (RN)
has raised fears of a further step towards a "union of the right." Thequestion can even be turned around: what is still preventing this union
today? Analysis. ---- On October 30th, a parliamentary bombshell: for
the first time in the Fifth Republic, a proposal put forward by the far
right was adopted. The denunciation of the Franco-Algerian agreement,
proposed by the RN, obtained the support of the main parties labeled as
right-wing and far-right (Horizons, The Republicans, the Union of the
Right for the Republic, etc.).
Whether in rhetoric, the exercise of power, or ideological vision, the
convergences between the far right and the "mainstream" right are now
undeniable: the same racist positions, the same hatred of social
progress, the same desire to maintain order and defend the wealthy...
From grassroots activists to the various levels of power, alliances are
being forged with ever greater openness. Moreover, in Europe, the bridge
between right-wing factions is being built with far less restraint.
The most striking example of this political fusion was Éric Ciotti's
strategy of joining forces with the National Rally (RN) for the 2024
legislative elections. Yet, by openly breaking the taboo of the "cordon
sanitaire," Ciotti did not achieve the expected success: he only managed
to secure a handful of minor endorsements, and his party is now an
appendage of the RN. Marine Le Pen, for her part, loudly proclaims that
she is even against the strategy of unity.
Reservations and calculations
Certainly, the RN's ideological victory within the right wing, as well
as its categorical rejection of any social policy, are powerful levers
for convergence. But committing to an alliance would mean concessions
for each component, which represent potential obstacles.
In this union, the bloc formed by the RN and LR is crucial. But for the
RN, officially allying with LR would mean the definitive repudiation of
the "neither left nor right" line that has characterized the party's
shift since the 2010s. While everyone can see that Jordan Bardella is
currently working to reassure employers by adopting a very liberal
stance, it is also this social posture that has allowed the RN to gain a
base among the working class. Furthermore, the National Rally (RN) also
represents a fundamentally anti-democratic project designed to allow it
to maintain control over society and retain power for as long as
possible. From this perspective, sharing power could mean diluting or
weakening this control, which is necessary to establish the segregated
society the RN envisions.
On the Republicans' side, the fear of dilution and of being reduced to
mere auxiliaries is at play. It must be said that, unlike the RN, the
historic right-wing party has lost much of its activist strength and
national influence. However, it continues to be strongly established at
all intermediate levels (regions, departments, municipalities). And
while the leadership and officials are generally aligned with the RN,
the example of Ciotti also demonstrates that, locally, prominent figures
may still be attached to Gaullist principles.
Beyond these two parties, the rest of the right wing, whether Macronist
or more radical than the National Rally, would form an even more
incoherent alliance with potentially hazardous results. Thus, while a
"union of the right" is being advocated and discussed, it is not yet on
the agenda... for the time being.
