Florian Eitel - THE TIME INDUSTRY AT THE DAWN OF GLOBALIZATION ----
SAINT-IMIER 1872: THE WATCHMAKING VALLEY AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THEANARCHIST MOVEMENT ---- 240 pp. EUR 18.00 ---- ISBN 978-88-9595087-7
----[Translated and adapted into Italian by Nino Lisibak, based on the
French version edited by Marianne Enckell.]---- Anarchism and
globalization are terms that have always fueled endless debates and are
often associated with stereotypes. For the press and much of the public,
anarchism remains anchored to the figure of the dreamer or the
terrorist. In other cases, it has become a local attraction-as in
Saint-Imier, where an international congress that laid the foundations
of the anarchist movement took place in 1872-becoming an integral part
of the tourist circuit.
Globalization is now considered a contemporary phenomenon due to the
growing importance of communications, trade, and finance, as well as the
dismantling of many national barriers. But history teaches us that some
globalizing trends have already manifested themselves in the past. It
was especially between 1860 and 1880 that technological and economic
innovations intensified, and it was precisely during these same years
that, thanks to its universal program and transnational activities,
anarchism grew and developed.
The book analyzes the Saint-Imier valley and its population, the
transformation of its villages, the watchmaking industry, the political
and economic fabric, communications, and the perception of time in terms
of the cultural changes they brought about. The narrative of the
September 1872 congress, its participants and their contacts, and the
importance of its resolutions, contributes new insights into the history
of anarchism, as well as the cultural implications of that congress: the
relationship between globalization and class consciousness in the
valley, collective identity and the consolidation of the anarchist
movement, the hope for a social revolution, and perceptions of the times
to come.
