Today's SCOOP is brought to you by our members.

Dear New Yorkers,

Are you getting gaslit at the gas pump?

When New Yorkers choose a premium grade of octane at their local gas station, there’s a good chance they may not be getting the fuel they’re paying for.

An analysis of city Department of Consumer and Worker Protection inspection data by the NYCity News Service and THE CITY found that almost all gas stations in the city failed at least one inspection in the last two years — mostly for not selling the grade of octane advertised at the pump.

And the wrong octane level could lead to long-term problems for vehicle engines — especially for drivers who make heavy use of their cars, like delivery workers and ride-share drivers.

Reporter’s Notebook

The stakes for Gov. Kathy Hochul’s budget proposal due Tuesday rose sharply Friday when city Comptroller Mark Levine said the city faces a combined $12 million budget deficit for the current and next fiscal years. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he agreed with the estimate and reiterated his call for higher taxes on the wealthy and corporations. Levine’s estimate was first reported by THE CITY.

Hochul signaled both in her State of the State address last week and in subsequent comments that she would remain opposed to tax hikes.

Tuesday’s budget should show if there is any wiggle room in the governor’s position, possibly over corporate tax hikes. It will test a commitment from the Mamdani administration not to include new tax revenue in the budget he must propose the first week in February unless they were included in the governor’s budget. However, he could propose cuts that would be necessary without new revenue.

Things To Do
