Today's SCOOP is brought to you by our members.

Dear New Yorkers,

There are more than 15,000 cameras throughout the entire transit system and on the more than 6,000 cars in the subway fleet.

And the MTA has early plans to harness the power of artificial intelligence to boost their ability to monitor and analyze the massive stream of information those cameras provide — to detect weapons, spot unattended items and even anticipate subway stampedes.

An unspecified number of tech providers and systems integrators responded to a request for information from the transportation authority early last month, officials said.

The request spells out steps in the MTA’s shift toward potentially using AI to perform complex public-safety work, such as analyzing real-time video feeds from subways and buses and predicting potentially unsafe behavior via cameras in the transit system.

But tech and privacy advocates have concerns about the abuse of such technology.
