December 14th is now a significant date on the calendar: recently designated by the United Nations as the International Day Against Colonialism in All Its Forms and Manifestations, it aims to reaffirm the universal principle of the right to self-determination for peoples and the objectives of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, also adopted on December 14th under the impetus of the USSR. The resolution, initiated by 23 countries, mostly from the African continent, did not, however, receive unanimous support during the vote: the United States and Israel opposed it, and 54 nations abstained, including France and all European nations. ...
