"Grenoble, IMAG, and War" is the title of a roundtable discussion co-organized by the Arms Observatory, the Association of Those Who Refuse Military Service and War, the Isère Anti-Militarist Network, the "Should Research Continue?" collective, and StopArming Israel. It was scheduled to take place this Thursday morning, January 22nd, at "IMAG," a building housing several computer science and applied mathematics research laboratories on the Saint Martin d'Hères university campus. These Grenoble-based laboratories are involved to varying degrees in the production of war technologies currently found on the battlefields of Ukraine and Palestine. The Verimag laboratory, for example, worked for many years with the Israeli Air Force (IAI, Weizmann Institute, IBM Haifi) on technologies (drones and AI) that are now at the heart of the Palestinian massacre.
One of the organizers, a member of IMAG, was initially subjected to repeated pressure in the form of multiple summonses and meetings in the director's office or his own office. The matter goes back to the General Directorate of Services at UGA[note]. On the day of the meeting, two hours before it was scheduled to begin, as he was arriving at his office, he was personally handed a decree signed by Yassine Lakhnech, the university director, for signature (which he refused): the decree effectively canceled the meeting due to "suspicion of disturbing public order," under threat of the use of his "administrative police powers to maintain order."
Faced with this blatant denial of democracy and academic freedom, the groups decided to enter the IMAG building anyway to hold the meeting in the lobby. The meeting proceeded peacefully, allowing them to interact and exchange ideas with around a hundred researchers, many of whom were outraged by the ban and the pressure exerted on their colleague.
