The Freiburg branch of Rote Hilfe (Red Aid) is calling for a demonstration on the decentralized nationwide day of action against the account closures of left-wing and anarchist groups:
BECAUSE OF TRUMP'S TERROR LIST? BANKS CLOSING RED AID ACCOUNTSAlmost as if this far too eventful year could only end with an increase in the rampant global chaos, the German Communist Party, the Anarchist Black Cross Dresden, Rote Hilfe e.V., and other organizations have had all their bank accounts closed. The left-wing movement in this country was unprepared for this. Nevertheless, it's not particularly surprising.
For years, we have been witnessing the escalation of conflicts, the narrowing of spaces for discourse, and attacks on progressive movements worldwide. The tactic used this time is called "debanking."
Unsurprisingly, the closures of these accounts are not due to illegal activities, but rather to political reasons. In the case of the German Communist Party (DKP), the issue was their aid for the people of Cuba. The Red Aid organization, on the other hand, is concerned with supporting defendants in the so-called "Budapest Complex." The allegedly behind-the-scenes "Antifa East" was declared a "terrorist organization" by the United States in November. In a preemptive move, local banks have therefore terminated their business relationships. This stems from the fear of potential problems with their US operations. In the worst-case scenario, they face exclusion from the SWIFT system, which enables banks to process payments across national borders.
Currently, only a few are affected, but many more are on the hit list of the United States and the European Union. Today, it's Red Aid - but who will be targeted tomorrow if this trend continues unabated? If far-right movements continue to gain influence, other progressive initiatives and marginalized groups could also find themselves in the crosshairs. Imagine if conservative forces in the US were to declare pregnancy counseling centers or LGBTQ+ organizations as "terrorist" targets - would banks here be just as willing to close their accounts?
If we hesitate too long, it could be too late.
We must act now, or we'll regret it tomorrow.
We therefore call on all civil, political, and social forces in this country not to accept "debanking."
The time is now, and we need you!
Get involved and participate on January 31st in Freiburg. We need to come together and get to know each other. The current attacks will not be the last.
Therefore, stop sanctions and debanking!
Reversal of all account closures!
