The United States' moves shouldn't surprise anyone: American imperialism wasn't born today, but is rooted in the age-old belief in feeling "exceptional," morally superior, and called to lead the world. Behind the media's slogans about the return of the Monroe Doctrine lie material interests we know well: resources, markets, technology, military supremacy. The crisis in Venezuela is just the latest step in a project to bring us closer to global conflict. This isn't just a series of conflicts closer or further from home, from those most closely followed at the height of their turmoil, like Ukraine or Palestine, to those that have always remained under the radar, second-rate ones. Rather, it involves stirring up a saturated, tired market and restoring confidence and enthusiasm in a global economy, diverting the attention of a society teetering on the brink of environmental collapse. An easy, cross-cutting solution, and we, obviously, pay for it, not those in charge.
And while they bomb elsewhere, the ground is being prepared here: cuts to the welfare state, fear, cheap patriotism, and militaristic rhetoric, because someone needs us to remain opposed to each other, scared, silent, and productive. And in the meantime, what happens to the other poor devils like us in lands of conflict? They die or flee, while the usual few continue to enrich themselves and live in another dimension (economic, physical, and mental), totally detached from the reality we live in. They don't care about our jobs, our health, or our freedom. They care that we continue to generate value. So the question is simple: if not us, who will defend what remains of jobs, freedom, and humanity? Do we really think a political class that lives on self-preservation and never fails to hand over our money and our hopes to the highest bidder will do so? Do we really think the indignation and frustration vented on social media will? We are in a historical phase in which the barriers of people's self-defense have collapsed. What we knew as the welfare state is being dismantled, and an economic system is being prepared that considers war "normal," because war is one of the few engines of profit that never fails. Here, a thought that history has tried to erase comes in handy: the anarchism that grew within the struggles of workers, the exploited of the last century, reminds us that mutual aid is not a romantic fantasy, but the real condition for living without masters and armies. That solidarity is not weakness, but collective defense. That freedom is not granted from above, but built from below, or it does not exist. We don't need heroes, but people who stop feeling alone; united, we can change this world and make it better. Because if we don't do it, no one else will.
