Far beyond the large demonstrations of 2013, there has always been resistance and organization for improvements, free passes, and self-management of public transportation. Since turnstiles existed, there has been a fight against them! It's no coincidence that several municipalities in Brazil today have some form of free pass. ---- But, for the debate to advance until the end of all turnstiles, the struggle must be constant. And this year, bus, train, and subway fares are increasing once again in São Paulo, worsening the lives of thousands of people.
Transportation, which should be free, consumes the meager income of students and workers who end up having basic rights denied, such as health, education, and leisure. Meanwhile, the profits of large transportation companies grow ever larger, as they advance in the privatization of trains and subways, supported by a veritable political mafia of government officials.
To discuss how this great contradiction is central to mobilizing popular struggles in the city, this month's Cinecelip will screen the 2014 film "For a Life Without Turnstiles" by Carlos Pronzato. It will also feature the presence of activists who helped build this path to where we are today. Come debate and advance the topic! Coffee and snacks will be shared collectively.
