WORLD WORLDWIDE SOUTH AMERICA BRAZIL - news journal UPDATE - (en) Brazil, OSL: Full support for the autonomous administration of Rojava (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Since the beginning of January, the Kurdish territories in northern Syria, known as Rojava - which include Arabs, Assyrians, Turkmen and Armenians - have faced a military escalation. On January 6, troops and militias linked to the Syrian transitional government, led by Ahmed al-Sharaa (al-Jolani), a former member of Al-Qaeda, attacked neighborhoods in Aleppo (Sheikh Maqsood, Ashrafiye and Beni Zeyd) and, days later, this offensive spread throughout Rojava, resulting in a violent siege in northern Syria. A ceasefire announced on January 18 was not respected, with intensified attacks in Haseke and Kobane, and reports of massacres of civilians.

The United States, which previously supported the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the fight against the Islamic State, withdrew its support, a change that was consolidated under the presidency of Donald Trump. The consequences of the offensive are serious: more than 100,000 civilians have been displaced, strategic territories have been captured by Syrian government forces, and approximately 1,500 members of the Islamic State escaped from a prison in Shaddadi, previously controlled by the SDF.

This attack against Rojava is not an isolated event, but part of a new regional strategy of US imperialism. On January 5 and 6, in Paris, the governments of Syria and Israel - historical adversaries - under US supervision, agreed on a joint communication mechanism, consolidating an alliance against the Kurdish people. The presence of the Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, in Paris indicates Turkish involvement, just as the visit to Damascus by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, promising political support to the al-Sharaa regime (HTS), demonstrates the involvement of European powers.

It is important to understand that the various actors have distinct strategic objectives, but they converge on the suppression of Kurdish autonomy. On the one hand, Turkey seeks to prevent any separatist movement by the Kurdish people, which it sees as a threat to its national security, in addition to the fact that Erdogan's government has political and ideological relations with Ahmed al-Sharaa. On the other hand, Israel seeks to use the new Syrian regime as a counterweight to Iran, as well as to obtain complicity with its apartheid regime against the Palestinian population. In this scenario, the US and European countries are trying to mediate negotiations between Damascus, Ankara and Tel Aviv, suggesting that the suppression of Kurdish autonomy is a point of convergence for multiple state and capitalist interests. The attack on Rojava signifies a profound setback in the rights gained by women in the region and in the social and political rights of the ethnic groups living in that territory. The attack by Abu Mohammad al-Julani's government on these territories signifies a step towards a possible Salafist dictatorship and the destruction of federalist perspectives in the region.

We, of the Libertarian Socialist Organization, unite in support of the self-determination of the Kurdish people, denouncing the geopolitics of nation-states and imperialist powers.
