Since December 28, the Iranian people have been rising up against the Islamic Republic, which has ruled the country for over 40 years. This uprising stems from ever-increasing economic hardship, but also, and above all, from decades of political, social, and cultural repression, and the oppression exerted by a far-right fundamentalist regime on the Iranian people, and especially on women. ---- This same regime responds with immensely violent repression and a deliberate policy of terror. As we write, reports indicate more than 10,000 deaths, despite the regime's attempt to suppress information by completely shutting down the country and cutting off the internet: the massacres are taking place behind closed doors. Thousands of arrests have also been made, potentially leading to summary trials and hundreds of executions.
This movement is not the result of foreign influence, as the Iranian government would have us believe, but rather the people's will to break their chains. Alongside the slogan "Jin, Jîyan, Azadî" - "Woman, Life, Freedom" - resonates that of Marg bar Diktator: Death to the Dictator. Together, they embody the will to overthrow the authoritarian power of the mullahs' republic and the hope of seeing a free society emerge.
The United States remains poised to intervene, and the son of the former Shah is already trying to present himself as a savior. But the emancipation of the Iranian people will not come from foreign interference, nor from a new dictator. Faced with the repression of the Iranian state, solidarity among peoples must prevail: let us everywhere affirm our support for the Iranian people in their struggle for emancipation!
