During the summer of 2025, the regional government of Attica-whose capital is Athens-secretly began planning, through a prearranged agreement, the repression and eviction of the Prosfygika squatters' community on Alexandras Avenue in the city center. In early 2026, it launched a new phase of its plan, using articles paid for by government spokespeople to promote the violent eviction of the Prosfygika community over the next six months. As usual, a large amount of public money was allocated for this purpose.
This is the fourth attempt to evict and loot Prosfygika in the last decade. This time it appears to be the most serious, and its execution seems imminent. To this end, they have exploited all their propaganda resources, appealing to social conscience with a supposed project to create social housing and shelters for relatives of patients at St. Savvas Cancer Hospital. The plan to evict our community is financed with 15 million euros of European funds from the ESPA Regional Attica 2021-2027 program.
They won't succeed this time either!
Prosfygika is a community of more than 400 people-Greeks, refugees, and migrants-including 50 children, vulnerable social groups, people with serious mental health problems, cancer patients, the elderly, and others.
During the assembly's 16 years of operation, all drug sales and production points, including those dealing in hard drugs, which had previously plagued the neighborhood with the tacit approval of GADA-the Athens Police Headquarters-have been eliminated. Furthermore, 22 autonomous, self-organized structures have been established for the residents of the community and the neighboring districts of Ambelokipi and Gkyzi.
Examples include:
- The Children's Center, the Self-Education Structure, and the Self-Managed Daycare Center, which operate daily with a comprehensive educational program for children in the Prosfygika community and the surrounding neighborhood, in direct collaboration with schools, parent associations, and teachers' unions in Ambelokipi, Attica, and throughout Greece.
- The Health Structure and the Social Pharmacy, which provide care to neighborhood residents in need, in collaboration with dozens of self-organized health structures, social clinics, and healthcare workers' unions across Greece.
- The Patient and Companion Reception Center at the St. Savvas Cancer Hospital, in collaboration with the hospital workers' union.
- The Berkin Elvan Community Bakery, which produces bread and baked goods daily for neighborhood residents and any Athenian who wishes to purchase them.
- The Technical Works Department for the maintenance of the Prosfygika buildings.
- The Community Cafe and Cinema for children and adults, which provides entertainment and contributes to the cultural development of neighborhood residents and Athens in general.
- The Community Center, which houses the library, reading room, and the weekly general assembly for community decision-making. Over the years, it has also hosted numerous social, political, and cultural events, presentations, and assemblies, both for the community and for other social groups and organizations.
-The Women's Structure, whose objective is the collectivization and empowerment of women and gender non-conforming individuals, the creation and dissemination of a culture opposed to the patriarchal system, and which also functions as an emergency shelter for women and gender non-conforming individuals who wish to use it.
-The Solidarity Team with the Homeless, located within the Community's facilities, provides food five days a week to dozens of people in central Athens.
The Community's structures are open to everyone and operate on the basis of self-organization and social solidarity.
Over the past year, the Community publicly announced its decision to carry out the exterior renovation of the Prosfygika buildings through self-financing and with the participation and support of architects, civil engineers, and other technical specialists. The regional government's plan is a response that seeks to preempt this social initiative.
This new attack by the Attica regional government is part of the Mitsotakis regime's central strategy to dismantle the largest social project currently existing in the urban fabric of Athens-and of all Greece in general-and one of the largest in Europe, which has attracted the attention and interest of universities and cultural and educational institutions in Greece and abroad.
Beyond its social character, the Prosfygika Community has been at the forefront of social, political, class-based, and internationalist struggles. The Community is also home to fighters from Greece, Europe, and revolutionary organizations from Turkey and Kurdistan. The Mitsotakis regime sees Prosfygika as a political opponent and is therefore trying to destroy it to gain political and economic advantage.
The supposed development of the neighborhood is a fallacy aimed at expelling the community and dismantling its models of social self-organization. It is clear that this is yet another pre-election ploy by a government in decline whose only banner is the doctrine of law and order.
They are lying when they claim that the regional government is concerned about social housing. Prosfygika already provides social housing for hundreds of people whom the crisis pushed onto the streets and the collapse of all social structures condemned to misery and marginalization. Their plan to leave over 400 people homeless in order to house only 50 who can afford it is the height of hypocrisy and inhumanity from a system concerned solely with its own profit and the plundering of public and European funds. It is a blatant excuse to dismantle existing social housing, while 80,000 empty apartments, owned by the City of Athens, remain vacant and unused in the city center.
They are lying when they claim that the regional government cares about the families of cancer patients, whom the Community has welcomed and cared for for years; people who, until now, slept in their cars for days or weeks while their loved ones received long-term treatments. The Community already provides healthy living conditions and support through its own work and resources. The regional government plans to leave the families of cancer patients on the street while establishing clientelistic relationships with people in need. At the same time, countless properties, owned by the State and the Church, stand empty just a few blocks from Prosfygika.
-They are lying when they claim the regional government is concerned about the neighborhood's social problems, when Prosfygika is an example of harmonious coexistence among people from all over the world: 27 different nationalities, with their corresponding languages, cultures, and religions, live in the neighborhood. Adjacent to an OKANA unit-Organization for the Treatment of Drug Addiction-it is the only place without drug trafficking, since those who prey on the most vulnerable have been expelled. The only public safety problem in the area is the policies of the GADA-Attica's police headquarters-and the Ministry of the Interior, which periodically invade the neighborhood with tear gas-in the vicinity of two hospitals-to dismantle a self-organized community that promotes a different model of social equality and justice.
-They are lying when they claim to be concerned about the use of Prosfygika and the development of Ambelokipi. The redevelopment of Prosfygika will cause a dramatic increase in rents and the cost of living throughout the area, displacing dozens and hundreds of residents who cannot afford the rising prices. This situation will gradually affect all surrounding areas, altering the social fabric by displacing current residents in favor of the wealthier.
We call upon all people with conscience and empathy to join the Prosfygika Community against the plans to evict and plunder this historic neighborhood of resistance, self-organization, and refuge.
We call on you to mobilize and share our struggle in your neighborhoods, family and social circles, schools, unions, and workplaces to protect Prosfygika from the government's predatory and speculative plans.
A government that showed no concern for the lives of the 57 people who died in the Thessalian train crash. A government that has turned Greece into Europe's dumping ground. A government that has dismantled all social structures and public services, including health, education, housing, and culture. A government that let so many people die during COVID-19. A government that has driven farmers and the countryside in general into poverty. A government that has expelled half a million young people from the country over the last decade. A government whose plan for Prosfygika is beyond trust; its words are nothing but lies and misery.
The eviction and repression of Prosfygika will have incalculable consequences for the mental and physical health of dozens of children, elderly people, and patients in the community.
The eviction and repression of the Prosfygika neighborhood will also affect the movement and all ongoing struggles, since every liberated space lost represents a severe blow to the common fight against the exploitation and injustice suffered by almost all of society.
For our part, we have the responsibility and the duty to defend the homes we have selflessly cared for for years as if they were our own, keeping alive a national and architectural monument that state planning would have demolished to profit from its reconstruction. We have the responsibility and the duty to defend the people of our community, who would otherwise end up sleeping on the streets.
We publicly declare that we will not cede a single inch of land to the regime and its companies and that we will fight with all our strength to thwart their dirty plan, even with our lives. We have the historical and social duty to continue the struggle.
We will ensure that the enormous cost they are forcing us to bear to protect our neighborhood and community is even greater for the government and its agents.
IF WE FALL, WE WILL FALL ON THEIR HEADS.
We call upon:
- Individuals, collectives, unions, associations, and organizations to do everything possible to stop the repression and eviction of Prosfygika.
- Individuals, collectives, structures, and initiatives to join or come live in Prosfygika.
- To remain vigilant against possible provocations from the State and the police, who will try to divide and dismantle the Community and our common struggle.
PROSFYGIKA AGAINST MITSOTAKIS AND THEIR COMPANIES. PROSFYGIKA IS SOCIAL RESISTANCE, SELF-ORGANIZATION, EQUALITY, AND SOLIDARITY.
NOT A SINGLE EURO OF PUBLIC MONEY FOR THE REDEVELOPMENT OF PROSFYGIKA.
EVERYTHING FOR THE COMMUNITY, THROUGH SELF-FINANCING AND SELF-ORGANIZATION.
HANDS OFF PROSFYGIKA. WE WILL WIN OR WE WILL WIN.
We invite you to the Open Assembly in Solidarity with the Prosfygika Squat Community, for more detailed information about the situation and the defense plan for the neighborhood and the community.
