We all know that almost all anarchists are atheists. Neither God nor Masters. They do not want to be religious, nor followers of any Guru. But I think they could be spiritual. For example, one can be a Zen Buddhist, or a Sufi. But a spirituality for everyone could be Animist or Gaian. ---- Animism is the worship of Nature, respecting the Carena or Caverna sisters, the Wolf or Rabbit brothers, the spirits of the Oak or the Basil or also the spirits of the Amanita, or the Psilocybes. ---- More than a century ago, anarchists joined the Spiritualists, and also the Naturists. Not all Anarchists were Orsini bomb nihilists; they were also hygienists and ecologists. Those who knew how to read helped those who did not, or followed the authors who defended what we now call human rights.
So, anarchists were also spiritual. Surely if they had grown up in that time, they would be Earth First activists! Or they would donate a few cents to an animal sanctuary like Santuari Gaia.
It is not easy to find bibliography on Animism in Catalan or Spanish. There is a very nice book describing "the spiritual path of the Territory" written by "Solitude of Alanna" pseudonym of Natalia Saldaña, published by Bruguera, from Penguin RandomHouse: The aforementioned "Hacia lo Salvaje" (2021).
Also an article by the Welsh Mhara Starling in the LLEWELLYN 2025 Witches' Agenda where she writes "As an animist, I do not use plants or herbs in my ways of working. Rather I work with the spirit of these plants and herbs. Growing a relationship with them and recognizing their personality".
Being Gaian means loving and reverent to Mother Earth: from the way the scientist Lovelock investigated, we know that Gaia is a form of life in itself.
Believe me, taking care of living beings, humans, or including entire landscapes, is something very anarchistic and spiritual at the same time.
Cheers!
Rebel Fairy.
