Salut à Toots!
Cette semaine, on fête la Journée internationale du jazz et l'anniversaire de Toots : beaucoup de musique, de belles rencontres, des jams, du swing, du vocal, un poids lourd venu de New York et une jeune garde européenne qui n’a franchement pas froid aux yeux.
Aujourd'hui Toot aurait eu 104 ans! Venez célébrer sa mémoire en musique, la jam démarre avec Gaspard Sicx, Erik Vermeulen et Manolo Cabras à 20h30
Jeudi, on voit grand : trois événements, cinq sets et une jam pour célébrer la Journée internationale du jazz. Dès 18h, Joachim Caffonnette et Adinda Hertmans ouvrent la soirée avec deux sets, dans le cadre de leur rendez-vous mensuel. On poursuit ensuite avec le groupe de swing de Stéphanie Bertrand. Chanteuse lumineuse, flûtiste inspirée, elle revisite le répertoire des années 20 à 40 avec ce qu’il faut d’élégance, de relief et de plaisir. Et comme une telle soirée ne pouvait pas se terminer sagement, on enchaîne avec une jam spéciale.
Vendredi, on accueille Lawrence Clark, saxophoniste majeur de la scène new-yorkaise. Membre pendant plus de dix ans du groupe de Rashied Ali, il s’inscrit dans la lignée directe de John Coltrane et porte avec lui tout un pan de cette histoire. Plus new-yorkais que ça, difficile. Et vu le groupe qui l’accompagne, on peut s’attendre à une soirée qui frappe fort. La nuit se prolongera avec une late jam ouverte par Thomas Grimmonprez, professeur de batterie au Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles.
Samedi, place à Elevator Music — un nom délicieusement trompeur pour un groupe qui fait tout sauf de la musique d’ascenseur. Le trio réunit trois jeunes musiciens européens rencontrés au très prestigieux CNSM de Paris. Pour l’occasion, ils invitent Yonatan Hes, figure bien connue à Bruxelles et musicien qui fait de plus en plus parler de lui aux quatre coins de la planète jazz grâce à sa maîtrise de l’alto et à son incroyable créativité. La soirée se prolongera avec une jam ouverte par le vibraphoniste Tristan Bernoud.
Dimanche, retour au jazz vocal. Stéphanie Bertrand revient avec un hommage à Betty Carter, tout en finesse, en liberté et en jubilation. Et pour finir la semaine en beauté, Tom Mac Guire, le crooner le plus crooner de Bruxelles, chantera avec ses complices new-yorkais les grands standards de Tin Pan Alley.
Autant de bonnes raisons de passer au club cette semaine — surtout à l’approche de la première bougie de notre petit Toots.

Deze week vieren we de Internationale Jazzdag én de verjaardag van Toots: veel muziek, mooie ontmoetingen, jams, swing, vocal jazz, een zwaargewicht uit New York en een jonge Europese garde die duidelijk geen schrik heeft.
Vandaag zou Toots 104 geworden zijn! Kom zijn nagedachtenis muzikaal vieren: vanavond start de jam om 20u30 met Gaspard Sicx, Erik Vermeulen en Manolo Cabras.
Donderdag pakken we groots uit: drie evenementen, vijf sets en een jam om de Internationale Jazzdag te vieren zoals het hoort. Vanaf 18u openen Joachim Caffonnette en Adinda Hertmans de avond met twee sets, in het kader van hun maandelijkse afspraak. Daarna gaan we verder met de swingband van Stéphanie Bertrand. Als stralende zangeres en geïnspireerde fluitiste duikt ze in het repertoire van de jaren 20 tot 40, met precies de juiste dosis elegantie, kleur en speelplezier. En omdat zo’n avond onmogelijk braaf kan eindigen, doen we er nog een speciale jam bovenop.
Vrijdag verwelkomen we Lawrence Clark, een toonaangevende saxofonist uit de New Yorkse scene. Meer dan tien jaar lang maakte hij deel uit van de groep van Rashied Ali, en daarmee staat hij rechtstreeks in de traditie van John Coltrane. Meer New York dan dat wordt het moeilijk. En als je ziet welke muzikanten hij meebrengt, dan belooft het een avond van hoog niveau te worden. De nacht gaat verder met een late jam, geopend door Thomas Grimmonprez, docent drums aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel.
Zaterdag is het de beurt aan Elevator Music — een heerlijk misleidende naam voor een groep die allesbehalve liftmuziek maakt. Het trio brengt drie jonge Europese muzikanten samen die elkaar leerden kennen aan het bijzonder prestigieuze CNSM in Parijs. Voor deze gelegenheid nodigen ze Yonatan Hes uit, een vertrouwde naam in Brussel en een muzikant die steeds meer weerklank krijgt in de internationale jazzwereld dankzij zijn beheersing van de altsax en zijn indrukwekkende creativiteit. De avond loopt verder met een jam, geopend door vibrafonist Tristan Bernoud.
Zondag keren we terug naar de vocal jazz. Stéphanie Bertrand brengt opnieuw haar tribute aan Betty Carter, vol finesse, vrijheid en speelvreugde. En om de week mooi af te sluiten, zingt Tom Mac Guire, de meest crooner-crooner van Brussel, samen met zijn New Yorkse kompanen de grote standards uit Tin Pan Alley.
Meer dan genoeg redenen om deze week eens langs te komen in de club — zeker nu de eerste verjaardag van onze kleine Toots eraan komt.

This week, we’re celebrating International Jazz Day and Toots’s birthday: plenty of music, great encounters, jams, swing, vocal jazz, a heavyweight from New York, and a young European generation that clearly isn’t lacking in boldness.
Today, Toots would have turned 104! Come and celebrate his memory through music: tonight’s jam starts at 8.30 pm with Gaspard Sicx, Erik Vermeulen and Manolo Cabras.
Thursday, we’re going big: three events, five sets and a jam to celebrate International Jazz Day in style. From 6 pm, Joachim Caffonnette and Adinda Hertmans open the evening with two sets as part of their monthly rendezvous. We then continue with Stéphanie Bertrand’s swing band. A radiant singer and inspired flautist, she revisits the repertoire of the 1920s to the 1940s with just the right touch of elegance, colour and joy. And as a night like this could hardly end quietly, we’ll follow it up with a special jam.
Friday, we welcome Lawrence Clark, a major saxophonist on the New York scene. A member of Rashied Ali’s group for more than ten years, he stands firmly in the direct lineage of John Coltrane and carries an important part of that history with him. It would be hard to get more New York than that. And judging by the band he’s bringing along, we can expect a night that hits hard. The night will continue with a late jam opened by Thomas Grimmonprez, drum professor at the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels.
Saturday, it’s time for Elevator Music — a delightfully misleading name for a band that does anything but elevator music. The trio brings together three young European musicians who met at the highly prestigious CNSM in Paris. For the occasion, they are joined by Yonatan Hes, a familiar face in Brussels and a musician who is making more and more waves across the jazz world thanks to his mastery of the alto saxophone and his remarkable creativity. The evening will continue with a jam opened by vibraphonist Tristan Bernoud.
Sunday, we return to vocal jazz. Stéphanie Bertrand comes back with a tribute to Betty Carter, full of finesse, freedom and delight. And to round off the week in style, Tom Mac Guire, Brussels’ crooniest crooner, will sing the great Tin Pan Alley standards with his New York companions.
Plenty of good reasons to drop by the club this week — especially with the first birthday of our little Toots just around the corner.
