WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE FRANCE - news journal UPDATE - (en) France, OCL: Iran. Desert the war! - See online: Umanita Nova - Journal of the FAI (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

The attack on Iran by the United States and Israel has triggered a spiral of war that is devastating the region between the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf. A global conflagration seems ever closer. ---- For those who oppose the Iranian theocratic regime from an internationalist, class-based, and anti-patriarchal perspective, there is a great risk that the regime, weakened by the January uprising, will harden further with these attacks.

The United States and Israel attach no importance whatsoever to the yearning for freedom that has cost the lives of at least twenty thousand people and imprisoned ten thousand political prisoners among those who chose to defy the Islamic Republic.

Trump is not aiming for regime change that addresses the demands of the insurgents, because he simply wants to secure favorable energy agreements.

What is at stake for the United States is control of resources and the Strait of Hormuz, the isolation of Russia, and the end of hydrocarbon trade with China.

Israel is seeking to settle scores with Hezbollah, exploiting divisions among Lebanese Shiites.

This is a risky operation, especially if the Israeli government does not limit itself to controlling the Strip up to the Litani River and attempts a broader ground operation, which could prove militarily difficult and could trigger further opposition and resistance domestically. Netanyahu is walking a tightrope, making calculated moves to bolster his electoral position. The Likud government and its allies in the religious far right are counting on expansion in the West Bank and war to avoid a defeat at the polls, which would spell the political end for the prime minister and the governing coalition.

However, playing the card of rallying together against a historical enemy may have backfired, especially if the conflict drags on: in the north of the country, once again, thousands are fleeing, struck by missile strikes.

30% of the Israeli population, the poorest segment, has no shelter from the bombs.

The Trump administration's trade wars have not yielded the expected results, eroding the consensus built on promises of a return to the golden age, where the United States would once again be the center of the global economy.

Polls indicate a significant loss of consensus, which could prove disastrous for the midterm elections.

After the coup in Venezuela, the Trump administration is once again playing the military card, because it is the only area where it still possesses an undeniable superiority, even over its most significant competitors.

This choice is not without risk, as demonstrated by the tragic consequences of the wars launched by the United States in Iraq and Afghanistan. In these countries, American military power enabled a victory on the ground, but this turned into defeat due to the brutality of the military occupation and the absence of solid allies, which only massive, unrequited investments could have guaranteed. This led to withdrawals, which only demonstrate the United States' inability to carry out its own colonial projects.

Iran is not Venezuela. This is evidenced by the much stronger and more offensive attacks compared to the farcical spectacle staged during the 12-day war last June.

But that's not all.

Two weeks after the start of this new bloody phase of the conflict, the United States and Israel, which have inflicted extremely heavy blows on the Iranian military and massacred more than a thousand people, do not seem to be able to keep the situation under control. The attempt to use Iranian Kurdish militias has so far been rejected by the recently formed coalition of parties in Iran's Kurdish-speaking region.

The systemic chaos that Trump is likely seeking could fracture US alliances in the region, which are already far more fragile than ever before.

One need only consider a country like Turkey, a historical ally that is now acting on its own behalf, actively supporting Palestinian factions responding to Hamas in Palestine, allying itself with Al-Julani in Syria, and settling scores with the Kurdish opposition. Today, Turkey is positioning itself as the pillar of the region, adopting a neo-Ottoman perspective and in direct competition with Israel.

In Iran, the internationalist, class-based, and anarchist political and social opposition opposes the war. Trump and Netanyahu's war is not being waged in their name. The tyrant's death did not bring about the end of the dictatorship, because only grassroots struggle can dismantle the religious and patriarchal order, opening new horizons of freedom capable of triggering a revolutionary process.

Israeli and American bombs are massacring the civilian population while an increasingly bloodthirsty and cruel regime deprives political prisoners of food and uses them as human shields in military bases.

Iranian anarchists oppose the war and the regime.

Israeli deserters and conscientious objectors have supported the uprising in Iran and oppose the war. They have our full support.

In our country, we have seen demonstrations organized by certain Iranian exile groups supporting the Israeli and US attack on Iran.

Other demonstrations, organized by various Italian left-wing groups, have waved flags of the Islamic Republic of Iran and images of Khamenei.

These are worrying signs.

We are in a dark time.

Italy, which for years has been a logistical platform for the war in Ukraine and Gaza, is now playing a crucial role in supporting the war in Iran.

The Sigonella airbase and the Niscemi MUOS[1]play a central role in military intelligence operations.

The missile frigate Martinengo has been relocated to Cyprus, and military aid has been sent to the Gulf States.

The government denies wanting to go to war, but our country has already been at war for years.

Italian military missions have been active for decades in Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Cyprus, Palestine, Egypt, as well as in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa.

We are deserting.

We are not enlisting on the side of one state or another.

We stand with all those who, in every corner of the world, are deserting war.

We want a world without borders, without armies, without oppression, and without exploitation.

Only an international humanity can lay the foundations for this free and equal world that can put an end to wars.

The struggle to close Italian, American, and NATO military bases is crucial, now more than ever.

Deserting war is not just a slogan; it is a concrete practice, strengthened by transnational alliances among the oppressed and exploited.

Let's sabotage the war!

[1]The "Cosimo Di Palma" air force base is located in Sigonella. MUOS, an American military communications system, is installed in Niscemi. These facilities are in Sicily.
