WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE BELGIUM BRUSSELS - The Toots Jazz Club - This Week at Toots: Swing, Blues & Stéphane Belmondo

This Week at Toots: Swing, Blues & Stéphane Belmondo

🇫🇷  🇧🇪

🇬🇧  Hello from Toots!

This week: swing, a towering figure of European jazz, and blues!

Tonight, as a prelude to the huge Lindy hop festival Brux Exange organised by our friends, join us for a swing jam with Guillaume Gillain, Joachim Caffonnette, Alex Gilson and Umberto Odone!

Thursday and Friday bring a very special event with the arrival of Stéphane Belmondo, invited by Armando Luongo. A towering figure of the trumpet and flugelhorn, he will be joining us for two nights of top-flight music. Opening Thursday’s programme is the ever-impressive Casimir Liberski with a solo piano set. And on Friday, the late jam will be opened by the young Brazilian drumming prodigy Gabriel Moraes.

On Saturday, it’s time for the monthly Brussels Rhythm’n Blues Club evening, welcoming Londoner Paul Garner and his modern blues trio. The night will open with the BRBC house band, Midnight Mary, and continue with a blues jam.

Finally, on Sunday, Furmi Gomez and Simon Groppe are now taking on the repertoire of Chick Corea. A tall order, as they say, but these musicians are more than up to the challenge. And for the evening concert, we welcome a familiar face at the club — someone you usually see at the door scanning your tickets. But Alessia Squarcella is also a conservatoire student and singer, and this time she will be presenting her project on stage.

Come along, come along: with the grey weather returning, a little jazz is sure to lift your spirits.

Stephane Belmondo (flgh, trp) ; Domenico Sanna (p) ; Victor Foulon (b) ; Armando Luongo (dr)

Stéphane Belmondo is one of the great figures of European jazz. A trumpeter and flugelhorn player with an exceptional gift for phrasing, he has built a remarkable career over the decades, marked by outstanding projects and countless collaborations. It would take a directory to list all the musicians he has shared the stage or studio with.

It is therefore a great pleasure — and a real honour — to welcome him to our little club for two exceptional evenings and three concerts.

Having known Toots Thielemans well, Stéphane Belmondo is especially delighted to perform at Toots Jazz Club, alongside a first-rate line-up brought together by drummer Armando Luongo.

PAUL GARNER BAND - BRBC
samedi 9 mai - 20:30
Paul Garner (guitar, vocals), Claudio Corona (organ), Oscar Reynolds (drums)

The Paul Garner Band from London, UK, is a powerful and dynamic blues trio featuring Hammond organ, drums and some of the finest blues guitar playing you will hear anywhere. Few bands on today’s scene manage, as they do, to push the blues into new territory while remaining deeply connected to its roots.

Their music delivers a gritty, funky and energetic sound, perfectly supporting Paul Garner’s intelligent, cliché-free original blues songs. The result is modern blues that feels both authentic and refreshingly original.

Individually and collectively, the band displays a remarkably high level of musicianship, making their live performances particularly compelling.

The evening will open with Midnight Mary, the BRBC house band.

Nostalgia In Grand-Place : Chick Corea - TRIBUTE
dimanche 10 mai - 16:00
Furmi Gomez (alto sax) ; Simon Groppe (p) ; Géraud Portal (b) ; Gabriel Moraes (dr)

Few pianists have left as deep a mark on the history of jazz as Chick Corea.
At once a towering improviser, a remarkable composer and a tireless explorer, he spent more than half a century moving through very different musical worlds, leaving his imprint on each of them: acoustic and electric, the most demanding jazz as well as more popular forms, sophisticated writing as well as the freest improvisation.

First brought to wider public attention through his collaborations with Miles Davis, and later through legendary groups such as Return to Forever, Chick Corea developed a language that was instantly recognisable: a touch that was both percussive and lyrical, an extraordinary sense of rhythm, a deep love of strong melodies, and that uniquely personal way of bringing together virtuosity, clarity and the sheer joy of playing. His music, shaped by classical, Spanish and Latin influences, continues to inspire generations of musicians.

It is into this rich, vibrant and deeply open musical world that Furmi Gomez invites us, for a Nostalgia In Grand Place devoted to one of the great architects of modern jazz.

Alessia Squarcella (voc) ; Giacomo Tabacco (g) ; Grigoris Theodoridis (db) ; John De Martino (dr)

This Sunday, Toots is delighted to shine a light on a face many of you will already know.
If you’ve been coming to the club since it opened, you’ve probably seen Alessia Squarcella at the front desk — but you may not know that she is also a singer and a conservatoire student.

This time, she takes to the stage with a deeply personal project in which modal jazz meets Mediterranean colours. Singing in Italian, Greek, Arabic and Albanian, Alessia weaves a musical world that is sensitive, intense and open to many horizons — an invitation to travel without leaving your seat.
