During the course of the pandemic, a so-called "measures opposition" formed, largely shaped by conspiracy-minded circles and right-wing extremists. Following the Russian attack on Ukraine in 2022, a right-wing peace mobilization emerged from this spectrum. So-called patriotic civil rights movements appeared, linking xenophobic positions with fears of socioeconomic decline. Against this backdrop, the AfD became the largest opposition party in the Bundestag, and neo-Nazis developed new activities.
In contrast, there were mass antifascist mobilizations. Millions of people took to the streets, and tens of thousands engaged in civil disobedience against AfD party conventions in Essen, Riesa, and Gießen. Antifa was a central force in these protests, as it was in the resistance against neo-Nazis.
Alongside widespread protests, there were also militant actions, to which the state responded with repression of an unprecedented scale. Criminal proceedings, such as those against the "Hammer Gang," are intended to serve as a deterrent through their severe sentences. In Hungary and the USA, Antifa was also classified as a terrorist organization and banned.
This book provides the foundations for understanding what anti-fascism is and why it has become one of the central political debates of the present day.
