On March 14, a demonstration against the war, the war economy, the militarization of territories, and the F-35 fighter-bomber training at Birgi took place in Trapani, in front of Palazzo Cavarretta on Via Torrearsa. The demonstration, called and organized by the No F-35 Trapani-Birgi Committee, is part of a broader mobilization led by the Committee against the second NATO training camp for F-35 pilots, planned for Birgi Airport. During the demonstration, several speakers criticized the planned training operations, pointing out that they are part of European and NATO rearmament, which is directly contributing to the worrying rise in international tensions, further exacerbated by ongoing wars. It was also noted that the training operations would expand the strategic role of Birgi Airport, further making it a potential military target. The impact of the F-35s on the surrounding environment was also questioned, arguing that their operation would pose a further threat to the local and surrounding ecosystem (of which the Stagnone reserve is an integral part). Furthermore, the risk was raised that F-35 training at Birgi would cause further damage to the already compromised economic stability of the area, including the possible downsizing or suspension of the civilian airport for military purposes (as already occurred in 2011 with military operations in Libya). The Committee's next meeting was the organizational meeting held in Salemi on March 22nd. At the meeting, operational proposals for the mobilization were discussed and upcoming public activities were organized, some of which will take place in April.
