Another year, the opening ceremony of the TIF is being staged with the familiar materials: government fiestas, paper handouts and promises of a "prosperity" that never reaches those who produce the wealth. The authorities, bankrupt at every level, political, moral, economic, and with nothing to offer beyond wars, fences and impoverishment, are fortifying themselves in the face of the possibility that the accumulated social anger will find its way out. They are struggling to impose the narrative that history has ended here, that beyond this world, where the majority will live in fear of deprivation, disease, war and the destruction of nature, there is no other perspective.
In the international arena, the extermination of the Palestinian people remains the darkest proof of what state barbarity means. A fragile ceasefire has been in place since October 2025, but in practice nothing substantial has changed. The death toll has never stopped: over 73,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the genocide, and more than 1,250 more in the months of the so-called "ceasefire," while the attacks, displacements, and famine continue unabated. Behind the US diplomatic plans for "disarmament" and "transitional administration," Israel seeks to consolidate with weapons what it has built over decades, an apartheid regime, a machine of control, militarization, and permanent terror that functions as a laboratory for every modern totalitarianism. And in all of this, the Greek state stands as a steadfast accomplice, openly advertising its strategic alliance with the slaughterers.In Greece, the attack of the state and capital is methodically escalating. Capitalist restructuring is destroying what is left of health, education, housing, food and transportation, turning every social need into a commodity. The crime of Tempi, with its trial evolving since March 2026 in a process that the relatives of the victims themselves denounce as an attempt to cover up, remains the most brutal proof of what the policies of profit cost our bodies. At the same time, state repression is becoming increasingly aggressive: struggles from below are being crushed, trade union action is being criminalized, asylum and squats are being attacked, with more recent examples being the evictions of the Anarchist Club of the Philosophy Department of the National University of Athens and the Self-Managed Club of the ASOEE, the right to demonstrate is being restricted and the anarchist movement is being systematically targeted.
This repressive campaign and the ongoing anti-anarchist pogrom finds its most provocative expression in the reopening of the Marfin case. Sixteen years later, in July 2026, the state is setting up a new stage of persecution, simultaneously seeking to establish a broader climate of terror hysteria, which included arrests and pre-trial detention, invasion of comrades' homes and media smear, building a case file that began with an anonymous email and is not based on any real identification of persons, condemning people to a regime of permanent hostage. These are elements that would not otherwise constitute pre-trial detention, a construction that tramples on any concept of presumption of innocence. The goal is clear: to terrorize the world of struggle, to set an example of intimidation for anyone who dares to raise their heads.
The most recent stamp on this state criminality was the murder of 20-year-old Thodoris Zavradinos in Argos in July 2026. An unarmed young man, on the autism spectrum and with an 89% disability, was shot in the head by OPKE police officers during a chase and succumbed to his wounds a few days later. The uniformed officers invoked, as usual, "warning shots" and "intimidation", the same set of justifications that unfolds after every murder with a state bullet. Thodoris is on the list alongside Zak Kostopoulos, Kostas Manioudakis, Vasilis Mangos, Nikos Sampanis, Christos Michalopoulos and all those who paid with their lives for the unconscionability of a police force that is trained and equipped to kill those below, with the cover of a state that shields and rewards it.
The field of health is receiving a new blow, as privatization progresses at full speed. Underfunding, the closure of structures and endless waiting lists for surgeries and treatments are leading to the disintegration of the public health system, opening the market to private profiteers. Understaffing, the flexibility of labor relations of health personnel and the abandonment of hospitals are taking away from many even basic access to care.
The same logic culminates in the precision that crushes the lower social classes and with the auctions of first homes that throw people onto the street. At the same time, within schools that are literally collapsing and operating with shortages in teachers and infrastructure, the state accelerates the privatization of education. The assessments, the model showcase schools and the permanent measurement mechanisms aim at nothing other than the deepening of class barriers, the discipline of students and teachers and the crushing of labor rights. In universities, the attack continues with disciplinary prosecutions and expulsions of students, with the police inside the schools, with the evacuations of self-organized spaces, with the connection of institutions with private capital and the war industry, and with the constant attack on the social character of asylum.
In the labor field, cynicism has become law. The 13-hour workweek, which was still advertised as a "scenario" last year, has now become an institutionalized reality since the beginning of 2026: with Law 5239/2025, the state and the bosses legalized the extermination, baptizing it "flexibility". The ability to work up to thirteen hours for an employer, with the so-called "consent" being translated in practice into coercion since the refusal must be justified by the employee himself, means a world where free time disappears and the human being is transformed into a disposable component of production. It is the normalization of a labor Middle Ages that buries every conquest won with blood in the struggles of the past, from the eight-hour day to the right to strike.
And the price of this regime is measured in dead. Within the first few months of 2026, dozens of workers, approximately one death per day in some periods, breathed their last on construction sites and workplaces, with hundreds more seriously injured, victims of intensification, the absence of protective measures and the treatment of human life as a cost. To the same macabre list are added the dead from the criminal management of the pandemic, the victims of the Tempi, the murdered Roma by the organs of repression, and the drowned migrants and refugees at the borders of fortress Europe. The new migration framework (Law 5307/2026), which incorporates the European Pact and criminalizes even the very act of staying without papers, intensifies surveillance, blocks access to asylum and turns confinement into the norm for thousands of people whose only "crime" is that they are asking for a life.
The same logic of treating life as a cost also applies to the natural disasters caused by fires every year. This summer, the country is once again counting ashes: five dead, close to 200,000 acres burned and over a hundred ruined homes, from Crete and Lesvos to Laconia and Western Attica. In the battle with the flames in Rethymno, two firefighters lost their lives, trapped in a difficult spot, while in Psatha two more people were killed in the collision of two rented firefighting helicopters. Behind the rhetoric about the "climate crisis" and the fireworks of the demonstration programs, the essence remains constant: the complete absence of prevention, the abandonment of the countryside, understaffing and the outsourcing of forest firefighting to private contractors. The state leaves forests, animals, property and human lives to burn, while it pours billions into armaments and surveillance, once again burdening the bottom and those it sends unprotected to the front lines.
Against this global totalitarianism, we as anarchists oppose the weapon of social, class and internationalist solidarity. Never before has the organization of anarchists and dynamic intervention in all social fields been so necessary. In every open front, where the aggression of the state and capital manifests itself, we fight for the radicalization of the struggles and their connection with the overall issue of social emancipation. Because the only realistic way out for those below is the organization for social revolution, Anarchy and Libertarian Communism. For a world founded on dignity, justice, freedom and solidarity, a world without exploitation and oppression of one person by another.
