For the second consecutive year, the Sicilian Region, whose anti-Mafia commitment is well-known, has promoted the campaign "From Spilled Blood to Donated Blood" to commemorate the Capaci massacre in which Judge Falcone and his escort were killed. To the thousands of young people who came to Palermo from the rest of Italy, or who demonstrated in various Sicilian towns on May 23, 2026, blood donation was proposed as the most tangible and concrete act yet devised in memory of the victims of the Mafia.
It must be acknowledged that among the "creative" ways in which the Mafia has been addressed recently by institutional anti-Mafia groups, donating blood to young people is among the most original and engaging. It has nothing to do with boring historical conferences, debates, seminars, and in-depth workshops, which no longer have any appeal in the age of social media. Much better is the call of blood, which embodies a strong symbolic value.But what does donating blood, an undoubtedly civilized act of human solidarity, have to do with the fight against the Mafia? This has already happened with another brilliant idea, that of Minister Piantedosi, when he placed the transparent case containing the wreckage of the Fiat Croma, belonging to Judge Falcone's security detail, at the center of Castelvetrano's public square. It was meant to serve as a warning for the future, but instead it was removed after three days because it was realized that local mafiosi were mistaking it for a trophy.
Even the blood donation among young people hides a trap: does it signal a willingness to donate blood to future Mafia victims, or is it instead a prelude to a larger mass recruitment of young, pure blood to serve the State? When will blood donations begin in preschools, on Republic Day or on November 4th, the anniversary of the victory?
