Semantics matter in news, and today’s case concerns “humanitarian.”
After Witkoff praised Putin as a “humanitarian” yesterday, Trump slightly backtracked, saying Witkoff probably meant Moscow’s release of Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old retired teacher imprisoned by Russia on bogus charges to begin with. A few Republicans have slammed the humanitarian label, but that doesn’t appear to change derailed Washington’s attempts to discuss economic ties with Moscow, with Lukoil’s $22 billion in overseas assets already under discussion.
And overnight, Mr. Humanitarian also unleashed a torrent of drones and ballistic missiles. Three waves totaling 21 missiles began raining down on the capital at 10 p.m. and continued for hours, hitting energy and metro infrastructure, among other targets. But that is nothing compared to the top 10 things Mr. Humanitarian did to Ukraine, as we compiled.
Did we mention that Mr. Humanitarian also cluster-bombed central Kyiv overnight?
Otherwise, Ukraine appears to be gaining momentum at the front despite the grim forecast at the rear. Khartiia claimed to have launched a first-ever underground counteroffensive, while Russian casualties also reportedly broke a record between yesterday and today.
We shall overcome, as the old song goes.
