Dear New Yorkers,

Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, is hoping to hold onto her seat with a big margin of victory, driving home a message about making the state more affordable. Polls show her up by more than 10 points over her Republican challenger, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who has campaigned on public safety and taxation issues.

The economy and cost of living are the biggest concerns for New York voters, according to an October Quinnipiac University poll. The gubernatorial race will be closely watched by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his team as they prepare to push the next governor to raise taxes on the wealthy to fund housing and childcare in the city.

Other statewide elections include those for comptroller and attorney general, in which Democratic incumbents Thomas DiNapoli and Letitia James are defending their seats from Republican challengers Joseph Hernandez and Saritha Komatireddy.

New York City voters are also deciding the fate of the five ballot measures put forth by Mamdani’s charter revision commission that are intended to speed up local government operations. Here’s our guide on what those involve and how they could reshape city life.

Nationally, Democrats are aiming to take back both chambers of Congress with pivotal races in states including Texas, Maine and Michigan. If those efforts are successful, two Brooklynites could end up running Congress: House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
