[NL] GROOT NIEUWS!

[ENG] GREAT NEWS!

Content: BASF, the trial of the field liberators from Wetteren, Poland, Seralini and late lessons, GMO-free, Reading tip

BASF…

the world’s biggest chemical company finally understands that its potatoes  don’t work, and decides to stopthe European approval processes for GM potato products.
From BASF’s official press release: “The company will discontinue the pursuit of regulatory approvals for the Fortuna, Amadea, and Modena potato projects in Europe because continued investment cannot be justified due to uncertainty in the regulatory environment and threats of field destructions.” The Fortuna Potato was part of the promotional test field in Wetteren, Belgium in 2011. More on their official website.

Trial of the field liberators from Wetteren…

Thanks to all of you that were present at the court of Dendermonde on January 15th to support the 11 accused Field Liberators! It was great to see so many support activities in the past weeks, to receive public support messages (see here), witness growing mobilization in your networks and see the support beer circulating! For images and a press review of the trial see here.
The trial was yet another example of the undemocratic character of the GMO debate. Without a real discussion, the judges dismissed and rejected the witnesses and video testimonies that were called upon by the activists’ lawyers to execute their defense. The judges also rejected the request from the more then 90 voluntary defendantsto be judged at the sides of the activists. These crucial elements of the defense were meant to challenge and put into context the dishonest image and criminalisation discourse that have come to define the Wetteren action and the hundreds of citizens that were present that day. Exercising juridical power, the judges performed a direct action silencing at once the right of the accused to defend themselves and the possibility to question GMOs.
This refusal motivated the decision of the 11 defendants and their lawyers to leave the tribunal. Hearing only the arguments of the prosecution, and its demand for severe suspended and immediate jail sentences of up to 8 months, the judges now have to deliver their judgment on the 12th February. Do NOT waste your energy on going to Dendermonde on the 12th of February. If sentenced, the accused will oppose the decision and we invite you all to put GMOs back on trial later this spring!

Poland, Séralini and late lessons...

Earlier this year, Poland had already decided to ban 2 GMOs, the maize MON810 and the potato Amflora. Poland is now the eighth country to ban Monsanto Maize. More here
Prof. Séralini’s team at the research center CRIIGEN convince more and more people that long-term tests on GMOs are needed and that the toxicity of pesticides has been underestimated. Séralini's study revealed the lax assessment regime which has allowed the commercialization of such products, on the part of agencies including the European Food and Safety Agency (EFSA). Their serious professional misconduct could endanger public health and lives. Séralini and his team therefore continue to put pressure on EFSA to release the data they use to approve GMOs in Europe. EFSA also previously denied that there is a lack of long term toxicity testing. The Directorate General for Health and Consumers of the European Commission rejects EFSA's opinion. Read more here. A video of the press conference of CRIIGEN in Strasbourg, January 15th here [in French]
The European Environment Agency (EEA) is waking up to the fact that some new technologies are causing problems and is making recommendations. EEA released an report that highlights a number of systemic problems related to new technologies. 'Late lessons from early warnings: science, precaution, innovation' illustrates how damaging and costly the misuse or neglect of the precautionary principle can be. Section C deals with the inadequate testing on the long term impacts of GMOs.

GMO-free…

Would you like to contribute to creating a GMO-free Europe in the meanwhile?  Dacian Ciolos, European commissioner of agriculture, has launched a public consultation to ask people whether they would like to see the development of GMO-free organic agriculture. You can answer questions on what you want agriculture in the future to look like here . Or be inspired by the initiative of a cluster of farmer, environmental and North South organizations, together with the biggest consumer organization in Flanders, Test Aankoop. They demand GMO labeling for products of animal origin that contain animals fed on GMOs and challenge Flanders’ biggest farmer’s union (Boerenbond) to support them. Details here [in Dutch].

Reading tip…

If you would like some fresh food for thought  on how the GM industry damages science, Lord Melchet wrote a very interesting article about the seven sins against science committed by the pro-GM-lobby, here. To dig deeper into the science – anti-science discussion, listen to this interview with Mark Lynas, the environmentalist who recently swopped sides in the GM debate.

Kom naar DENDERMONDE (BE), 15 januari 2013, 8 uur

Justitieplein 1.
* een (video)-steunboodschap maken:
naar video@dewereldmorgen.be. Foto's (1 foto per mail) en
tekst (max. 500 tekens) mag je doorsturen via
patat@dewereldmorgen.be .

background
On 29 May 2011, hundreds of activists decontaminated a GM potato field trial in Wetteren . They pulled up genetically modified potatoes and replaced them with organic varieties, which are naturally blight resistant, tasty and healthy.
The ‘Great Potato Swap’ was public and nonviolent. The aim of the action was to stimulate debate about the pros and cons of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in our fields and on our plates. It succeeded: the public debate took off in the papers, online, and on the radio and television. Schools and universities took part as did NGOs and the political and farming sectors. This act of civil disobedience made people aware of the dangers of GMO’s and the role that public research plays in their development. We need to find real sustainable and fair solutions to respond to future food challenges.
11 activists have been accused of belonging to a criminal gang, and risk being asked to pay €200,000 damages. Why so much? Because the Flemish Institute for biotechnology, University of Ghent, Ghent HogeSchool and the Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research wants them to pay not only for six months of private security for the site, but also for the pro GMO rally, the time the biotech industry spent dealing with the press, and the many hours that the lecturers spent spreading pro-GMO propaganda by e-mail and Facebook.
Campaigning for a more sustainable agriculture is not a crime and this prosecution for criminal gang is undemocratic.
More than ninety people have volunteered to join the accused in the docks to reinforce this message. Among them are farmers, politicians, academic scholars, civil society representatives, concerned citizens and French voluntary reapers. This is a strong message that the 11 accused belong to a broad social movement.
