Dear friends,
Gajraj the elephant used to have two long tusks, but now the ends of his tusks have been chopped off. His four legs are bound and shackled in thick chains, leaving open wounds around his ankles. While he used to beg for money for his handlers, he's now too old and sick to even do that. And he's lived in captivity for fifty-one years.
But now there's hope for Gajraj. Rita, part of the Elephant Freedom Fighters group, is working to make sure that Gajraj can live the rest of his days in peace and comfort at an animal sanctuary. She's started a Care2 petition to gather public support to help rescue this abused elephant. Will you sign her petition?
Right now, Gajraj lives near the Yamai Devi Temple temple in Satara, India, where his handlers use him as a tourist attraction. He has remained there since he was only 12 years old, after his handlers moved him more than 500 miles away him from his previous home. Visitors report that he suffers so much abuse and isolation at the temple that he is dying from mental anguish and despair.
Veterinarians who have visited Gajraj have shared that Gajraj lives in a state of filth. The stench of his accumulated dung and urine is apparently so strong and so foul that these doctors can smell the odor from far away, before the elephant even comes into view. Despite the open sores on his legs, Gajraj constantly pulls against his chains, trying to break free and escape. The 63-year-old animal doesn't even have the company of other elephants, and he is heartbreakingly lonely.
Thank you for all that you do,
 Miranda B.
