Dear friends,
We've been arrested. Beaten. Humiliated. Intimidated. Pushed into the shadows.
Time and time again, we fight to live openly as LGBT people in Uganda. Too often, we're met with violence and hate. But still, once a year we come together to march for equality.
My name is Qwin and I'm a proud lesbian helping organise Uganda's annual pride events. Pride is so important to me – a rare chance to show my country that LGBT people exist and we deserve the same safety and dignity as anyone else.
But we're entirely dependent on the support of people like you – there are no big corporate sponsors. We're on our own. That's why I'm reaching out today. All Out members fully funded last year's Pride Uganda and we need your help again.
If All Out members raise €18.000, we'll have enough to fully fund our Pride Parade and other pride events this August, including crucial security costs to help keep me and my friends safe.
Life for LGBT people in Uganda is incredibly dangerous. You can be sent to jail just for being gay. But every time we come together, our community grows stronger. When we started Pride Uganda in 2013, there were just a few dozen people. But now, over 500 people join in.
I still remember that first march. We were arrested by police because of rumours that a same-sex marriage was happening. And just last year, police infiltrated our social media and violently raided a Pride Uganda event.
But we're determined to keep going. Every time I march, I'm marching for those who are still too scared to join us. Terrified of being arrested by police. Or being kicked out by their family. Or being harassed and beaten by an angry mob.
My greatest hope is that one day, no one will have to live in fear because of who they are or who they love. Pride Uganda is our greatest tool to get us there. But it can only happen in 2017 if we have enough support.
I am so thankful for the amazing support we saw from All Out members last year. It would mean so much to all of us fighting on the ground if Pride can happen again this year.
Thanks for going All Out,
Qwin Mbabazi F.
