Sign Now Dear friends, Stephen Parkinson, a senior government advisor in the United Kingdom, chose a frightening and dangerous tactic to punish a whistleblower. A few days ago, 24-year-old Shahmir Sanni revealed that the Vote Leave campaign may have cheated during the UK's Brexit vote. In retaliation, Parkinson chose to tell the world that Sanni is a gay man, without his consent. It is sickening that a government official would sink to this level for revenge. We must tell British Prime Minister Theresa May to set an example by firing Stephen Parkinson now. While this is certainly a grievous invasion of privacy, at first glance it may not seem like a serious threat to Sanni's well-being. But many members of Sanni's family live in Pakistan, where the consequences for being openly LGBTQ can include violence toward the outed person and their loved ones. Worried for their safety, his family members are now taking urgent measures to protect themselves. Parkinson's actions could be deadly, yet even without this added threat, they are just plain wrong. All retaliation is unacceptable. But by trying to shame, demean and endanger Sanni, Parkinson went far beyond trying to ruin this concerned citizen's career. He attacked Sanni's whole life. We cannot allow Sanni's outing to set a new precedent for how the government responds to whistleblowers.
