Women Face Abuse on Twitter — Make it Stop

Hi ,

Just bumping this email in case you missed it — we launched our new campaign to hold Twitter accountable for abuse on the platform last week.

Twitter started with a simple, but powerful idea: Let people tell their story about what's happening in the world right now.

Well, this is what’s really happening — abuse is running rampant on Twitter, making it a toxic place, particularly for women. And when Twitter fails to follow its own rules on abuse, it can drive women right off the platform.

Tweet at Jack Dorsey now if you think women have a right to express themselves freely and without fear of violence.

We agree that everyone should have “the power to create and share ideas and information,” as is part of Twitter’s mission. Yet women have been targeted and harassed into silence on Twitter’s watch for years. And it’s still happening.

Women’s freedom to express themselves is routinely silenced by toxic abuse on the platform. Tweet CEO Jack Dorsey now and make it stop.

Thanks in advance,

Margaret

Take Action Now to Tackle Online Violence & Abuse Aginst Women on Twitter
Dear Luc,
For many women, Twitter is both an essential means of communication and a platform where violence and abuse is allowed to flourish, often with little accountability.

Women—and all people—have a right to live free from violence. The effects of online violence and abuse are very real. In addition to silencing women’s voices, online violence and abuse can also have a worrying psychological impact on women who experience such abuse.

Tweet at Twitter’s CEO Jack Dorsey now to tackle abuse on Twitter.

Businesses like Twitter have a duty to respect human rights in its operations. The company’s failure to enforce its own policies against violence and abuse is negatively impacting women’s rights to freely express themselves online without discrimination and fear.

Women deserve to have their voices heard. For girls and young women who have grown up with Twitter—and social media platforms—our research finds that the online violence and abuse and the silencing impact of it risks normalizing the idea that women expressing an opinion will be met with violence and abuse. This is not only worrying, but serves to negate girls’ future political and civic participation online.

Send a tweet to Twitter’s CEO Jack Dorsey today.
