That's because a few days ago, two men decided to shoot a mama bear and her babies dead — all for no good reason. There is no excuse for this heinous and cruel crime. Sign the petition to demand justice now! Unfortunately for the poachers, these weren't just any bears. This animal family was part of a joint three-year study by the U.S. Forest Service and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The mother had a tracking collar on and their den was equipped with a motion-detecting camera — so that's how we know exactly what happened. Andrew Renner and his son Owen were skiing on Esther Island when the bears caught their eye. Owen shot at the mother bear twice. When the babies started crying and shrieking, Andrew shot and killed them, too. That's when one of the poachers noticed the tracking collar, and attempted to cover up the slaughter by removing the device. Then they skinned the animals, butchered the mama, threw the meat into bags, and skied away. What these poachers did to an innocent bear family is sickening. Authorities must take action to hold these men accountable.
