Dear friends,
Borneo pygmy elephants are smaller and rounder than other elephants, and their tails are so long that they sometimes drag on the ground. They are probably the friendliest and cutest elephants in the world. But there are only about 1,500 of them left.
In the last 40 years, half of the Malaysian Borneo tropical forests, that the pygmy elephants call home, have been clearcut for palm oil plantations. As a result, these cute little elephants have been robbed of key food sources and forced to come into closer contact with humans. Many have starved to death or been killed by plantation owners who consider them pests.
PepsiCo plays a major role in keeping palm oil plantations in business because they buy a staggering 457,200 metric tons of palm oil every year. Please sign this petition demanding that the company stop buying conflict palm oil and help save the Borneo pygmy elephants from extinction.
Companies like Kellogg's and Mars have already stopped using conflict palm oil in their products. And while PepsiCo has said that it is committed to using sustainable palm oil, it hasn't actually done anything to back up its commitment. PepsiCo products like Quaker Chewy Granola Bars, Lay's potato chips, and Cheetos are still made with palm oil produced by plantations in Malaysia and Indonesia.
As long as the palm oil companies are making a profit, they will continue to clearcut tropical forests until there is nothing left. The Borneo pygmy elephants are already on the endangered species list. If we don't want to lose them for good within a few short years, we need PepsiCo to follow through on its promise.
PepsiCo has the power to make conflict palm oil unprofitable. So sign this petition right now to demand that they stop buying palm oil from companies that clearcut tropical forests. If enough people speak out now, we stand a chance at pressuring PepsiCo to do the right thing and save the Borneo pygmy elephants before it is too late.
Thank you,
