"He yelled that my boyfriend and I should be ashamed and that 'aberrations' shouldn't kiss on the street. Police officers came by. I thought I was safe until one of them said: 'I hope you learned your lesson. If you want to be a bicha [fag], do it inside four walls. Officers don't have time to protect shameless viados [faggots].'"
"I got punched in the mouth. He had a knife and told me to look down. He called me a viado[faggot], told me 'aberrations' belonged in the cemetery. I reported it to the school principal. They called the police and it was filed as a simple mugging."
"We shared a quick kiss and a woman called security and yelled: 'I'm sunbathing and suddenly there are two women making out? This is a family place!' We went to the police station, but the officer just said 'You should let this go. It's not going anywhere.'"
Luc,
These are all real stories from All Out members in Brazil. That last one is mine. 😔
Here in Brazil, stories like these are not rare. If you ask any LGBT+ Brazilian, almost everyone will have one to share.
Discrimination and hate crimes against LGBT+ people have been on the rise since last October's general election. And there's no sign that they'll stop anytime soon. Not while the president of Brazil is someone who has said, on camera, that "[gays] will not have peace. And I have immunity to say this: I am homophobic and I'm proud of it."
In just 3 days, Brazil's Supreme Court will decide if discrimination against LGBT+ people should be a crime.
Next Tuesday, the day before the vote, I'll be delivering our signatures here in Brasília to the Supreme Court judges to let them know the world wants them to protect LGBT+ Brazilians, like me, from violence and discrimination.
More than 350,000 people have signed so far! Can you help us get to 400,000 in the next 48 hours?
This decision will impact the daily lives of so many LGBT+ people in Brazil. It could let so many young LGBT+ people know that they matter. That it’s not okay to be picked on, called names, beaten, or much worse, because of who you are or who you love.
Thanks for standing beside me and all LGBT+ Brazilians! 🌈
