Article posted to the Direct . Embat's militant members, Iru Moner (Secretary of Social
Action of the CGT of Catalonia), and Emili Cortavitarte (President of the Salvador Seguí
Foundation), on the occasion of the centenary of the Canadian strike. ---- The authors,
linked to trade unionism of a libertarian tradition, evoke the episode of the Canadian
strike - the manufacturing mobilization that led to the acknowledgment of the eight-hour
working day in Spain, which is now commemorating the centenary, which they understand as
the first great success of a new model of integral and trans-sectorial trade unionism,
proclaimed in the Congress of Saints of the CNT of 1918. They also compare the situation
of a century ago, with that of the last years, marked by a cuts in labor rights and the
living conditions of the working people and, as a hundred years ago, to explore new ways
of defending labor rights to deal with digital era capitalism, temporality and inequalities

Iru Moner |  @ moner80
Emili Cortavitarte |  @ EmiliCortavitar

On February 5th, it has been a hundred years since the start of the Canadian strike. A
vague with capital letters that has been burned in the collective memory of the popular
Catalan classes and from all over the world. Its transcendence has a lot to do with the
achievement, for the first time in Europe, of the 8-hour day, a claim approved months
before at the Sants Congress in 1918. With it, Robert Owen's formulation was reached in
1810, "8 hours to work, 8 hours for leisure and 8 hours to sleep". As a result, it had
been assumed by the labor movement since the 19th century and, among others, it was the
basic claim of the martyrs of Chicago (the revolt of Haymarket), which originated on May 1.

But it also represents the success and transcendence of the said Congress of Saints of the
Catalan CNT and of its essential contribution: the unions only. These unions grouped the
old trade unions in trade unions or sectors of production. For example: the unions of
steelmakers, fountains, mechanics, hoists, locksmiths, boilers, blacksmiths, turners ...
merged into the unions of metallurgy.

Without the only unions, perhaps the Canadian strike would not have occurred. That comes
from a spark like the dismissal of 8 administrators who, after a trial period, did not
accept a lower salary than their peers in exchange for a fixed contract (today we would
say double salary scale).

The Canadian represents the success and transcendence of the Congress of Saints of the
Catalan CNT of the previous year and of its essential contribution: the unions only. These
unions grouped the old trade unions in trade unions or sectors of production

A time earlier, this basic protest action could have been reduced, fortunately, to the
business sector of the company. The structuring in unique unions and the confederacy of
the CNT caused the spark to become a vindicating and liberating fire. From the
administrative sector of Riegos and Fuerzas del Ebro, the strike extended to the rest of
the employees of the subsidiary, from the subsidiary to the group of operators and
operators of Barcelona Traction, Light with Power. From this great company to others like
Catalana de Gas, Sociedad General de Aguas, Ferrocarriles de Sarrià ... finally to become
a general strike.

These transformations and confluences of trade unions in unions, unions, local and
regional labor societies and federations in local and regional federations of the CNT did
not occur due to a strange automatism or rebound effect, were the result of the
resolutions of the Congress of Sants, of the "excursions" throughout Catalonia of the most
active confederal elements and of the practice and analysis of the class struggle of the
Catalan proletariat as a whole.

Nor can this strike be understood without solidarity, without which 40 days of strike can
not be confronted, thousands of layoffs, thousands of detainees. Cooperatives, Athenians,
working and popular centers, neighborhoods and villages were places of resistance,
shelter, common "ranch", a lasting example. That yes was an example of socialization of
the struggles.

This was the slap that even businessmen, in some way, copied the organizational form of
the CNT. Joining under one umbrella of defense of the privileges of the landlords and
creating the free trade unions (employers' guns) that brought so many misfortunes to our
class.

Since neoliberal capitalism began to be hegemonic, we began to go back. Under the false
illusion of easy credit and long work days, the myth of the middle class was installed in
the working households

This centennial must serve to recover the historical memory of good, to recover pride of
class; but also to reflect on today and the future.
Even today, although we still enjoy many of the rights and work improvements that we
started during the twentieth century, the material conditions of working people gradually
worsened. Since neoliberal capitalism began to be hegemonic, we began to go back. Under
the false illusion of easy credit and long work days, the myth of the middle class settled
in working-class homes.

Aznar and the fateful years of the absolute majority of the PP were the final thrust to a
working class increasingly disorganized and numb. Years of individualistic propaganda made
us lose most of the classical community ties, complicating young people from neighborhoods
and working-class people. Where, or you think middle class, or you laugh in the false
caricature of  macarons , drugs and crime.

And that's how it went. Generations that have grown by finding the first jobs at ETT, for
which changing jobs constantly seems normal. In fact, insecurity is normal. Not reaching
the end of the month is normality. To go cold in the dining room of house not to ignite
the stove is normal. Sharing the apartment at 30 and in the corner, it is the suffocating
normality.

We can not be afraid to try other organizational forms. Perhaps some are based more on the
intersectoral unit within large work centers with different companies. Others maybe
working from the neighborhood or village

Under this reality that a good part of the population lives, especially the one born after
the 80's, it is from where we have to build a new union strategy, which also responds to
these needs. We can not be afraid to try other organizational forms. Perhaps some are
based more on the intersectoral unit within large work centers with different companies.
Others maybe working from the neighborhood or village. Understanding that there are added
oppressions, such as the ethnic or gender that we have to find complicities.

We need to think and talk a lot. Inside and outside the union. To find a strategy where we
all are. Where we all add Before the Congress of Saints was celebrated, meetings were held
for months, articles and lectures were published and channels of participation and
proposal were opened through Solidaridad Obrera.

So that they remain locked in the union premises, thinking that the company is stupid not
to organize itself, is to remain in the museum. Not reorganizing itself to deal with
capitalism of the digital era, temporality and inequalities, is to accept that we are
defeated. Not leaving the comfort spaces on the left, being armless with social movements
in the neighborhoods and working-class people, is to make way to the extreme right.

Iru Moner is the social action secretary of CGT in Catalonia , and Emili Cortavitarte is
the president of the Salvador Seguí Foundation

Last October we celebrated our fifteenth year as a collective Alambique in Xixon
(Asturias) and we want to do it by sharing with all the people and groups who have walked
with us these years and feel close to the fight against social exclusion and its real
causes. ---- 15 years Denouncing capitalism, which excludes us from the possibility of
developing our own lives. 15 years viewing the impoverishment and social exclusion it
causes. ----  15 years Proposing the achievement of basic social rights (food, housing,
health and education) in a community way. ---- 15 years Putting instruments in place to
work for an alternative society, such as social rights information offices, community
initiatives and the Basic Income of Equals. ----  15 years Reflecting on disobedience as a
necessity here and now so that we are not denied the most basic of rights, that of LIVING
DIGNELY.

15 years Generating mutual support and ties between people and groups that want another
social model, essential to implement any of our initiatives.

15 years, a starting point in which they expect new challenges, new struggles, new
encounters, new hopes, new ways of doing, taking care of ourselves.

Always slowly and by the margin.

AGAINST EXCLUSION, SOCIAL JUSTICE, SOLIDARITY AND MUTUAL SUPPORT. LIVING DIGNELY IS A RIGHT.

CNT Catalonia we join the mobilizations and actions organized because of the 8 March (8M)
international day of working women in solidarity with all women who suffer any type of
violence and / or exploitation. ----  However, making an analysis of real changes, which
we can give as authentic achievements, fruit of the different mobilizations of March 8 of
last year, we could not find them, since they did not happen. Yes, it served to raise
awareness of a growing feminist movement, it served as an amplifier of some of the many
different needs that women have been demanding for a long time, and evidently not only in
the workplace, because it goes beyond all spheres of the dominant system. But they
continue to ignore our constant petitions to stop having to do just that, to beg our
freedom and the right to be treated with respect in all walks of life just as we want it
for other living beings.

It is urgent to relegate economic interests in the form of grants, since it is another way
of speculating with our lives, because they murder us, rape us and blame us, and all at
the same time. Because as a working class we are divided as we are the ones who suffer the
most labor precariousness. Together with the feminized sectors, mostly care and home
services, we head the first labor exploitation posts and particularly with more intensity,
migrant women, we are the wage gap in each monthly payment, to those who consider us to be
the least cost productive tools but we are fired for being pregnant. We continue to think
that indifference to all the violence to which we are subjected is in turn another form of
violence.

For some time now, some of us have been saying that collective organization is the only
effective way to deal with the manipulation and political use of any state and
institution, and that creating alternative spaces where we can carry out actions beyond
the symbolism of a single day of strike are as basic as tool and form of struggle. We need
to be able to choose our way and reclaim the heritage that generations of past women have
built. We need to make it clear that our anger at the comrades who are no longer there
will not end on March 9 at dawn. It is necessary to break the social peace and the
established order because it only benefits the ones of always. In our quest for freedom,
it is urgent for us to create fraternal bonds in our closest circles to reach a day
further and thus, together, break the chains with which we want to submit.

MORE -  AN INCREASE? I CAN NOT STAND! ---- We invite everyone, after the first act of
mobilization against the tariff increase in Curitiba, to the popular plenary of the
struggle for transportation, in which we will discuss the next act, among other next steps
and actions, to prevent the retrocession of the tariff increase! ---- Although the
increase in Curitiba has been postponed to March 25, we have not yet achieved its
cancellation, and so we will continue our fight and not retreat! ____ The City Hall of
Curitiba, together with the URBS and the business community of Curitiba, announced for the
beginning of 2019, still in February, another increase in the value of the public
transport fare. ---- Currently the amount paid is R $ 4.79, being part subsidized by the
state government - resulting in the R $ 4.25 paid in the ratchet. However, current
political representatives, city mayor Rafael Greca (PMN) and state governor Ratinho Jr.
(PSD) are still negotiating for the renewal of such an agreement - which may force the
transport user to cover the difference, without ever interfering in the profit obtained by
the entrepreneurs. In this scenario, the estimated minimum value for the new Curitiba fare
would be R $ 4.80, which may go up to absurd R $ 5.00 or even R $ 5.20. Although the City
Hall has not disclosed any official value, the limit for its establishment is February 28,
after the base date of collectors and drivers that should occur on the 26th of that month.

After this increase, Curitiba's rate will become the most expensive in all of Brazil,
without any adjustment in the minimum wage or in the salary floor of most of the careers
in the market.

In addition, the city also announced the expansion of the electronic ticketing system,
causing the dismissal of 6,000 collectors and bus collectors throughout Curitiba. Such a
measure will be adopted without the investment in any other labor market that can reemploy
the laid-off workers, in an already intense and aggravated scenario of unemployment. The
dismissal of these workers represents a cut of 20% of the costs of the entrepreneurs and
there is no forecast that the rate will decrease proportionately.

The use of public transportation as a great source of profit for Curitiba's business and
political elite is evident, putting the price of all this in the pocket of the worker and
the worker. There are many irregularities pointed out throughout the system, and even then
the changes are slow to happen. For example, the audit conducted by the Court of Auditors
of the state of Paraná after the great demonstrations of 2013 state that the passage in
the capital could cost up to R $ 2.25 at that time, were it not for the obvious
overbilling.
In the same vein, an investigation by the Public Prosecutor's Office of the State of
Paraná denounces the favoring of the Gulin family in the bids for service rendering in the
city; this family that has long monopolized the collective transportation of Curitiba
(http://www.mppr.mp/20258//20656/). -para-Curitiba.html).

Considering this context, it is no exaggeration to say that public transport in Curitiba
is controlled by a real mafia that profits from the exploitation of the rights to come and
go, access to the city and urban mobility. The Technical Tariff, which is paid to
entrepreneurs, went from 3.78 to R $ 4.78 in two years of Greca government, and from
February to May 2018 rose to R $ 4.97! An increase of 26.5%! While accumulated inflation
for the period is 7.11%! How many shoulders will we break by sustaining a fee that pays
more to entrepreneurs than it delivers to the population?! It is time to organize
ourselves as a population and set the opposite position to the new rate increase! We have
to fight so that our voice is always heard!

In the face of all this, we invite everyone and everyone together to build a PUBLIC
PLENARY AGAINST INCREASING THE RATE IN CURITIBA!

Where - First Floor Hall of the UFPR Historic Building, located in Santos Andrade Square

When - 28/02, Thursday

What time - 6:00 p.m.
