Thousands of wild hippos may soon be killed in Zambia unless we speak up. You can help stop this unnecessary slaughter.

Dear friends,
Zambia has announced it will open up a hippo hunting season along the Luangwa River starting this May. Shooting thousands of hippos is the most inhumane way to manage a population. It will cause immense suffering and pain for these animals.
Zambia's hippos are considered "vulnerable." Poachers and habitat destruction have left their future in jeopardy. The government claims the area is overpopulated and that they need to cull the animals by at least 2,000. But a cull should be the last resort! These animals could easily be moved to other less populated areas.
Zambian leaders have refused calls to spare the hippos' lives by moving them to countries where the population is sparser. Research suggests that culls cause hippos to reproduce more quickly to replenish their numbers, so the real incentive for this cull is probably the US$3 million in trophy hunting fees that government officials will collect from this hunt. We need to do all we can to protect vulnerable hippo populations.
Thank you for your compassion,
P.S. Fewer than 130,000 hippos exist in the wild. There are many nonviolent ways to ensure that populations are better distributed across their range. Sign the petition now to help save these innocent lives.
