According to reports, the other pooches were cowering underneath the trailer home in an attempt to avoid Gatlin's merciless bullets. At his trial, the case seemed open and shut. Gatlin admitted to murdering four of Carie's five beloved dogs — in fact, he even boasted about it. Carie, as well as animal rights activists, expected swift and harsh justice. But the judge only charged Gatlin with one count of animal cruelty, and let him walk away with a pathetically light one-month jail sentence. This is unacceptable. We demand real justice, now! Why did Gatlin get off so easy? Well, it's because of a nearly 10-year-old Mississippi law that limits how harshly an animal abuser may be punished. In fact, if the abuser has no prior animal cruelty convictions from the previous five years, their crime is considered just a misdemeanor — no matter how many animals they harmed during the incident, or how the animals were tormented.
