Schools are deliberately targeted to stop children, particularly girls, from being educated. Students are caught in the crossfire because soldiers are using their schools as a secure barracks or to store ammunition. For more than 10 years, Human Rights Watch has been investigating such attacks and working to stop militaries from using schools. Ninety countries have endorsed the Safe Schools Declaration, committing to protecting students and schools during wartime.
