Around the world during times of war, students, teachers, and schools have frequently come under attack from armies and armed groups.
Schools are deliberately targeted to stop children, particularly girls, from being educated. Students are caught in the crossfire because soldiers are using their schools as a secure barracks or to store ammunition.
For more than 10 years, Human Rights Watch has been investigating such attacks and working to stop militaries from using schools.
Ninety countries have endorsed the Safe Schools Declaration, committing to protecting students and schools during wartime. We spoke with Bede Sheppard, deputy children’s rights director, about HRW's work and the importance of the Safe Schools Declaration.
