In the second volume of his historical trilogy, Alain Bihr studies the slow shift of an "
protocapitalism" still marked by feudalism to capitalism as we know it. ---- The first
volume of the First Age of capitalism Alain Bihr, published in September 2018 (see
Alternative Libertaire September 2018), explored methodically European commercial and
colonial expansion which began in the XV th century. This second volume tackles, in an
equally complete way, the transformations that make the European continent the one where
structured societies emerge on the basis of the capitalist relations of production,
between 1415 and 1763. ---- While waiting for Volume 3, which will conclude this First Age
of Capitalism , Alain Bihr invites us to explore the many transformations of these
European societies, drawing on Marx's analyzes of the origin of capitalism. Although this
question has already been very often dealt with, the narrative is all the more
enlightening here as the concepts are clearly defined and always related to their concrete
manifestations in European societies. This work makes it possible to get out of the
confusion and liberal legends that surround the origins of capitalism, such as the
received idea that it was spontaneously built by the simple action of individuals in
search of their particular interests. Meanwhile Volume 3, which will conclude this First
Age of CapitalismAlain Bihr invites us to explore the many transformations of these
European societies, drawing on Marx's analyzes of the origin of capitalism. Although this
question has already been very often dealt with, the narrative is all the more
enlightening here as the concepts are clearly defined and always related to their concrete
manifestations in European societies.

Yet the European states played a significant role in this process, even though their
economic mercantilist doctrine seemed a priori far removed from the needs of capitalism:
the desire to reduce imports as much as possible and to promote exports to enrich
themselves depend on neighboring countries does not particularly favor the merchant capital.

The expropriation of peasants
Paradoxically, it is this concern to ensure a surplus trade balance that will lead to
recommending a whole series of measures to ensure the development of industrial capital,
with the aim of improving the competitiveness of so-called national agricultural and
industrial products: "it develops a political economy and an economic policy centered on
the growth and the development of the productive forces, exalting the spirit of
enterprise, attacking all forms of idleness, both noble and popular". Not only have the
states been indispensable tools for the bourgeoisie seeking to transform old feudal
societies, but it is also the context of quasi-permanent rivalries and clashes between
European states that has favored the development of this capitalism. So, far from the
liberal legend, capitalism is indebted to the state, to war and especially to the
absolutist form of monarchies !

Similarly, the establishment of capitalist relations of production has not been made "
naturally" by the desire of merchants enriched by colonial trade to employ their fellow
citizens too poor to work on their own. It is rather a deliberate choice of the
bourgeoisie to impose the detachment of the peasants from their land (which then becomes a
good exchangeable on the market) to force them to sell their labor force. And this choice
will pass as well by attacks on the rights of the peasants (gleaning, pastures ...) that
by the "constraint with the salaried work" (repression of vagrancy, forced labor ...)

Capitalism is a global system
But Alain Bihr's analysis also avoids the Marxist caricature of monolithic social classes
in struggle for the emergence of capitalism or the maintenance of feudalism. While part of
the bourgeoisie, enriched by distant commerce, becomes part of the nobility by buying
burdens or estates, some of the high nobility do not hesitate to invest in thriving
commercial or industrial activities. The complex games of the various layers of the
bourgeoisie and the nobility explain the role, more or less revolutionary or conservative,
of both. The example of the different bourgeois revolutions of this period shows that the
layers of the merchant bourgeoisie most integrated with the elites of monarchies will
often make a counter-revolutionary choice, likewise the petty bourgeoisie, protected by
the system of guilds. While the working classes (peasantries, protoproletariat ...)
support these bourgeois revolutions hoping to reduce the weight of seigneurial rights,
their objectives are in fact diametrically opposed to those of the merchant bourgeoisie,
which hopes to destroy the collective rights on the land and to establish a capitalist
market of the land. These bourgeois revolutions are, moreover, not mere applications of a
prior bourgeois program. They have their own revolutionary logic, which allows the
expression of popular demands far beyond bourgeois intentions, and sometimes provokes
reversals or changes of alliance. While the working classes (peasantries, protoproletariat
...) support these bourgeois revolutions hoping to reduce the weight of seigneurial

Taking into account the complexities of religious orientations in the different European
states, Alain Bihr relativizes the role of Protestantism in the spirit of capitalism ,
sometimes considered, after the work of Weber, as an essential condition of capitalism. In
addition to this capitalist behavior, many chapters are devoted to the emergence of the
figure of the "free" individual (freed from the interpersonal ties of the feudal period),
the construction of a modern state, the rule of law where the political and legal
organization is rationalized to allow capital to remove the obstacles and limits to its
valuation.

This period, which Alain Bihr calls protocapitalism, is, in all fields, a transition of
three centuries in which the conditions of existence of the new capitalist world are
progressively imposed in an old world where feudal characteristics still remain largely.

This detailed study, which goes from the first industrial automations to the evolution of
the account books, including those of the family structure (and many other aspects), gives
a clearer and more subtle vision of the origins of capitalism, but also of its nature.

On 30-31 May and 1 the  June took place the 5th Festival of Anarchist Book in the city
center of Patras (in Esperos in King George Square). During these three days, many people
passed by the Festival site, establishing contact with anarchist / radical books and
participating in political and cultural events, in a particularly successful organization,
both politically and logistically, as well as with regard to acceptance of the event.
Thus, a free area of the State and the Market was formed, a public space that became a
place for meetings and debate, interactions and criticism. ---- As we mentioned in the
so-called event policy: ---- "The purpose of this festival is to highlight the richness of
anarchist, libertarian and anti-authoritarian concepts and to spread these ideas in
society, especially for young people around the city. This is particularly important at a
time when state propaganda prevails against those who opt for self-management and
grassroots initiatives as a means of struggle, and racism, social cannibalism, and the
return to fascism are presented as the only alternatives to overcome current crisis. At
the same time, even within resistance movements, political debate and the exchange of
ideas for deeper analysis are treated with contempt; we believe, therefore, that the
promotion of autonomous education,

In times of radical setbacks, where the individualization and fragmentation of resistance
seem to predominate in society, we find it very important to construct such events,
organized horizontally from their base, through which people of any age have the
opportunity to approach wealth of anarchist ideas in a direct and unmediated way, free
from the distortions of the ruling class.

The first day began with the presentation of the second round of the events on
"Libertarian Ideas in Literature" (the first round took place in November 2018, as part of
the commemorative events of the 5 years of the Self-to Proso "). The event began with the
contribution of a companion from the " Epi ta Proso ", with the following title: "Tipping
the myth of Superhero: The Dark Knight in the service of State Sovereignty" Batman "by the
publisher Red'n'noir, by Thasos Theofilou. Following these events, the book "The
Adventures of Nono" by Jean Grave and Modern School followed the presentation by Stasi
Ekpiptondes. Both events have criticized both the role of superheroes (insofar as they are
built by the ruling class) as well as fairy tales and libertarian education.

It was during the second day that there was a very interesting presentation of the book
"When the Cock Cries in the Dark ...", an anthology of anarchist texts written between
1971-1978, edited by Michael Protopsaltis of the Vivliopelagos publishing house, as well
as a video called: "Anarchists in the 1970s. The struggle of memory against oblivion is a
struggle against power." From the video followed a discussion of the anarchists of this
period, their texts and their lines, and we end with a useful conclusion about the
present. The day ended with a "rebetiko" aimed at the financial support of the Fair, which
took place on the "stairs of Patreo", where many people participated.

The third and final day of the Festival began with the presentation of the book "The last
flames of the Resistance. A Story of a Volante Rossa Fighter "by Diadosi, a presentation
that was followed by a video testimonial by Paoli Finardi, whose title was" We did what we
had to do. " The Festival ended with a hip-hop presentation aimed at providing economic
support for the Festival, with TNT (Rationalists), Penthimos / Clown, Spira & KK, DJ Gzas
and Hiphopathi groups present. This show was the best possible closing for the Festival,
full of sounds, poetry, slogans and stories of the road and the struggle for revolution.

Concomitantly with the book fair, which took place during the three days of the festival,
there was an exhibition containing political posters, a photographic gallery, political /
radical books, texts and magazines of the anarchist / antiauthoritarian movement, as well
as T-shirts, whose sales were destined to reconstruction of the squatter "Libertatia" in
Thessalonica, which was burned by fascists in January 2018.

While members of the  Social self-managed center "Epi ta Proso "[1], we would like to
thank all those who responded positively to our invitation to participate in the 5th the
Festival of Anarchist Book (editorial collective, authors, political groups, music groups,
comrades who supported the events with their presence and everyone who showed interest in
the Festival). The great response that the Festival had this year is also thanks to those
comrades who have supported us since the first year in which the Festival took place, as
well as the new fans who learned about the Festival and recognized the importance of
supporting it over the years . Without all these people and the projects that they form,
such an organization would not be possible.

As far as we are concerned, we can say that we will continue to promote autonomous and
unmediated forms of communication and expression as well as egalitarian, horizontal and
collectivized spaces with the belief that the way we fight must be directly related to the
world we want build with the revolution. We will continue to pursue emancipation on a
variety of issues and issues that have a direct bearing on our lives and the impact that
the ruling class's political and economic plans and decisions have on our lives.

Against the belief of representation, against all electoral illusion that cultivates
submission and abdication, we recognize that this Festival was just another moment, one
more piece in the struggle that we, as anarchists, have assumed for a society liberated
from the shackles of the State and of the Capitalism, for a world of equity, solidarity
and freedom.

This fight will continue ...

No Brasil, o
A atividade

AVANTE A LUTA COMBATIVA INTERNACIONALISTA!

Announcement of the Anarchist Political Organization for the elections of 7 July 2019 ----
NO BORROWING, NO CONVENTION WHAT IS A COUNTRY & CAPITALIZATION ---- The depth of the plan
of enforcing the sovereigns is to empower the peoples of their perception of their
inevitable crash. The philosophical perspective of modern totalitarianism is centered on
trying to make impossible, even as an idea, any plan to overthrow the existing regime for
the benefit of the poor, the weak, the oppressed. Today's sovereigns are investing in the
notion that it is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of the authoritarian
state establishment and the exploitative capitalist production system. All political
blocks are being attacked together, each with its own weapons, in the case of social
liberation, in the so-called "utopia", defending the present sad sadness of poverty, war,
transnational conflicts,

All the political plans that come down to the "palaestra" of the elections have two common
elements, the management of the existing system, whose processes are legitimized by their
participation and the dislike of social self-organization. Bourgeois democracy treats the
"diversity" of electoral combinations and the impeccable freedom of choice of one of them,
developing its most complete version. The elections, like any other process in the
bourgeois system, is nothing more than the promotion of "market society" in politics, the
manifestation of all projects from one end to the other as a political spectrum as
commodities. So the election is just a supermarket where you can choose any commodity as
long as you do not forget to pay for the exit.

On the one hand, it is rather self-evident, but on the other hand it is necessary to say
that regardless of how the different political blocks, and especially those who claim
power (power, center-right, left-wing, right, center-right, etc.) have no other goal than
servicing capitalist precepts, and all their competing struggle is limited to who will
primarily draw the privileges of the head of civilian management. It is obvious after the
last four years of the rule of the social democratic form of modern totalitarianism - as
it was partially renewed at the level of civilian personnel under the acronym of SYRIZA -
that this formation, as it was absolutely expected for those who do not have delusions,
what went through his hand for: to stabilize capitalist regularity, ie the profitability
and exaggeration of workers, to re-literate the political and state institutions, to
deepen the country's participation in the warlike designs of the imperialist centers, and
especially the US, to strike the most unimaginably on the pavement with surgical precision
pieces of contestants who never missed the "radical" tale he tried to sell. A narrative
whose only purpose was to suppress the social and class resistance movements that had
developed in the past. This tactic quickly adapted to their task: rescuing the bankrupt
system that was marching under the massive protests of the oppressed, an adaptation would
mean for SYRIZA and his own rescue,

For the exploited masses, the polls that are about to be set up in the next period have
nothing to promise but a greater exacerbation of the conditions of slavery through the
strengthening of the regime's re-legitimation of its representation policy. On the one
hand, the continuation of the existing Social Democratic management approach will mean
even greater denervation of social-class resistances and kinematic disarmament at a time
when the recovery and widening of the collective struggles of society - and especially
those emerging from the bottom - is constant stakes, in order to put a stop to the pursuit
of state-capital-fascists. On the other hand, the return to the neo-liberal version will
trigger a new war round to those currently in the political-economic system. The poor, the
parodies, the struggling. The obvious objective is to subtract them so as to pave the way
for the unimpeded imposition of the plans of the political and economic elites who want to
impose social conditions on labor camps.

As long as the two protagonists are now "killed" to prove their differences in the run-up
to elections, the big picture suggests their absolute complementarity. If it seems capable
today that the right to impose the hegemony of neo-liberalism and to extend its policy of
attacking the workers, the unemployed and all of them below is because the Social
Democratic government in the name of the radical left crushed the movements, scattered
illusions and hallucinations in large social fragments only to put another brick in the
building of modern totalitarianism, to establish even more the notion that nothing can change.

We for our part have to admit that in fact nothing can change through the elections. But
everything can be reversed on the road. Society has produced enormous resistances in
recent years, and today the experience of the contestants is even greater. We know, on the
one hand, that abstention is a prerequisite for the formation of an attitude outside and
beyond the "solutions" and procedures, a large part of it is not recorded in a culture of
culture but in its confirmation by another concept an established resignation of all,
since nothing is, and can not be, changed. That is why it is a paramount bet on the way we
will live from now on to be able to oppress, exploit, persecute and marginalized,

We know that no matter what the election outcome will eventually be, it is certain that
the next day will be the start of a new fierce round of repression of the social and class
movements, especially the anarchist-anti-authoritarian, against which a sweeping a
seditionary attack that is aimed not only at limiting it, but at eliminating it
altogether. The political presence and action of anarchists all past years, the project of
self-organized and bottom-resistance, the vision of the Social Revolution, as the only
realistic alternative to society in the face of the allegedly inaction of state and
capitalist septicemia, in the darkness fascism and the deadlocks of reformist,

Suppression is a field where common state policy can manifest itself, but not the only
one. In the next period, irrespective of the political administrator, the Greek state will
be involved in new adventures to redistribute the region's energy resources, upgrading its
relations with NATO and its military preparation. Nationalism is the indispensable
reservoir from which to draw a social consensus to support the bourgeoisie projects for
hot episodes in the chessboard of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. The new
attack on labor rights will be overwhelming. The bosses are ready to seize the opportunity
of retreating the social-class movement to set even tougher exploitation measures. The
attack on the natural wealth of the country through extreme exploitation and violation of
the natural environment is yet another strategic direction. The final liberalization of
the Eldorado Gold mining projects in Halkidiki will be accompanied by the emergence of new
fields of exploitation and struggle. Against the overall and frontal attack of state and
capital, the development of the struggles, as well as their unmistakable or anti-party and
anti-party perception, is of great importance. The conclusions from the struggle in
Halkidiki make it clear that the local communities affected by the natural disaster
planned by the state-capitalist cluster should not choose a candidate local ruler but
activate new tactics such as total abstention from the polls and immediate action.

The next period is critical because, after a dense period of systemic assault and major
mobilizations, the power block attempts to narrate a new regularity. He puts forward a
logic of "what has happened, done" and invites us to be realistic and to accept the new
situation with the millions of unemployed people, with hunger wages, outraged hours,
looking back from the scenes of total depravity social pocketing, the plundering of our
lives, and the extension of the state of exclusion to larger and larger sections of the
population.

In the next period, we must engage even more vigorously in all the fields in which the
primary resistances emerge, extend the influence of the anarchist resistance to the
weakened sections, form new social alliances with the oppressed, locals and immigrants to
put a strong embankment in the sovereign designs. Organize with consistency and
stubbornness the days of counter-attack.

The bizarre confrontation saw two men, who have been accused of ripping off one of their
staff in a wages dispute, hold up traffic while throwing an almighty tantrum involving
smashed furniture, shirtless pushing and rolling on the floor as they demanded that the
Solidarity Federation (SolFed) stop picketing them. ---- The owners of CJ Barbers on St
James Street in Kemptown, Hamid Caram and Cyrus Shabini, attacked the protest, pulled down
banners and threw what appeared to be their own furniture around in front of a stranded
bus while shouting "you want the cash? Fuck off. I don't pay." ---- Caram and Shabini have
spent the last two months refusing to engage with the anarcho-syndicalist union, according
to SolFed, claiming that the arrangement they had with their former worker was "voluntary".

https://vimeo.com/344628905
However in an article explaining why they are campaigning, the ex-staffer explains:

"Before I started working at CJ Barbers I was desperate for work, desperate to find a
stable career and trade I could rely on long-term. I could not afford private tuition, so
to gain experience I was giving out free haircuts for the homeless on the streets of
Brighton. It was while I was promoting this practice on St James Street that I was
approached by a manager at CJ Barbers. After a trial I was told that they would train me
if I worked as an unpaid apprentice for two months and after this I would be hired
officially and paid a full salary. This sort of arrangement is illegal but is a far too
common practice in the barbering trade. Because of the role's illegality there could not
possibly be a contract. I was desperate and overly-trusting, so naively I agreed.

"After beginning work I had a feeling that things weren't right. I was not receiving the
promised education and my time was totally consumed with busy-work. I would be constantly
cleaning the shop and would be assigned P.A. work, such as planning and booking hotels and
flights for the boss's holiday. I mentioned to the managers that I thought that maybe I
should find work elsewhere but I was assured, "Don't give up! Just think - after a few
weeks you'll be on a full salary!" so I persevered.

"After two months I approached my boss and enquired about when I would be paid. I was told
that they were pleased with my work and my first pay check would be in two weeks. It was
after this pay day when I only received £100 that I told them I could no longer afford to
work there. I was told there was no hard feelings but when I contacted the following week
for a reference they refused to provide one - despite me working for two months for free
and being told they were pleased with my work. I later found out they also lied about my
progression and ability as a barber. I was told by CJ Barbers that I was nowhere near
ready to cut hair. When I spoke with barbers in other shops I discovered this to be a lie
used to keep me from leaving.

"I felt horrible about the whole situation. My trust and my vulnerable situation were
totally exploited. I thought that these people had my best interests at heart but it was
all a facade to use me for free labour until I caught on. This is why I approached SolFed
who informed me of my workers' rights. CJ's did not come close to fulfilling the legal
requirements needed to employ an apprentice or a volunteer - So I was in fact entitled to
minimum wage for this period which would come to £2800. I have evidence to prove I worked
for this entire period."

In a statement, Brighton SolFed said:

This was a significant escalation of a now familiar tactic of CJ Barbers, which is to
assault and attempt to intimidate picket lines. On the Saturday previous to this, Hamid
assaulted a female member of Brighton SolFed who was outside of the shop.

Our dispute with CJ Barbers is in relation to a former worker who was paid £100 for two
and a half months work. CJ Barbers have tried to claim that this was a "voluntary"
arrangement, but as the worker explains in this article, CJ Barbers did not uphold their
end of this (exploitative) deal, reneging on the promise of training and a job at the end
of the voluntary period.

For this reason, we are demanding that the worker is paid the national minimum wage for
the two-and-a-half months work he did, totalling £2,800. We offered to negotiate with CJ
Barbers before opening this dispute, and have offered them on a weekly basis the
opportunity to make a reasonable offer to open negotiations. Their only response has been
further intimidation, asking for ‘one-to-one' meetings with no offer of payment made.

Worker solidarity is stronger than bosses. We won't be going anywhere until this worker
gets paid.

An injury to one is an injury to all!

The next Brighton SolFed picket will be on June 29th from 11.15am.
