The announcement of the assignment of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina is
gathering almost unanimous praise from politics and print media. The usual prosopopoeia of
world opportunity, of the revival of the country system through infrastructure
investments, of the unique opportunity of visibility that would have positive effects for
years, combined with a certain nationalist and chauvinist rhetoric seems to leave no room
for any contrary voice. ---- Yet it would be enough to look at the experience of Torino
2006, with the construction of avant-garde and extremely expensive plants used only on
those occasions and remained as waste sanctuaries to disfigure the natural landscape; or
to the last great Italian work, Expo 2015, which had a return of image beyond all
expectations for Milan, but also and above all meant waste of enormous public money, wild
gentrification for some areas of the city, to the detriment of the poorer classes forced
to exist or move to the outer belt of the city, a labor exploitation built on the myth of
participation, which has seen thousands of young people volunteer (that is to say, unpaid)
for the success of the marketing operation, customs clearance of project financing to
finance useless and underused arteries such as TEM, Bre.Be.Mi and Pedemontana (even if not

Moving on to the mountains, Valtellina, Val di Fiemme and Dolomiti Ampezzane risk being

other parts: connection infrastructures, loudly requested by several mayors of the Olympic
territories; wild and impressive turistification; risk of compromising a fragile natural
environment that has been preserved precisely because of access difficulties.
As far as infrastructure is concerned, as soon as the victory of the Italian candidacy was
announced, deliriums of omnipotence started to dwarf the SiTav reasons: it starts from the
most abused request to extend the A27 motorway (so-called Mestre-Belluno) up to Austria,
the construction of new ski lifts affected by structural gigantism, passing through two
other Olympic villages, complete with residential complexes up to the sci-fi idea of
speeding up connections between the nerve centers of the Olympics, although it is not yet
known how (Bormio and Cortina are 4 and a half hours away from each other).
To this pouring of cement and technology released on an ecosystem that is still good or
badly balanced, we must add the immense amount of public that will pour into the
mountains, people who are often and willingly respectful of the alpine habitat, but that
in the indistinct mass of tourists who want to be treated as an all-inclusive resort
wherever they go, they won't even enjoy the scenery. There is already talk of respect for
nature, of less invasiveness as possible, of responsible tourism. All bales. How is it
possible to keep an ecosystem based on poor accessibility in balance if hundreds of
thousands of people are inserted into it that can only arrive by car or bus? Hundreds of
thousands of people who will eat, drink, smoke, shop, and fill secondary roads, they will
require huge parking areas, they will try to go for peaks and paths without having either
experience or preparation. A kind of apocalypse of two weeks that cannot be repaid only
with the huge flow of money that will arrive in the pockets of restaurateurs, hoteliers,
renters of equipment but which will risk to compromise the delicate mountain balance for
years, leaving behind them a mass of concrete constructions that after the Olympiad will
no longer make sense to exist, due to lack of demand.
The alpine evenings will be transformed into "eventifici" (cit. Alpinism Molotov) that
will bring the "Milan to drink" at the foot of the alpine peaks, obviously for those who
can afford it; the less well-off may be content to eat a slice of pizza sitting on the
steps of the church, perhaps being labeled as dirty tourists by lovers of decor.
Far be it from us to fall into the dialectic of the salvific nature, of the purity of the
natural world from which the human being has become detached; the human being is a social
animal, not a natural animal, and for this reason, as a sentient being, it can and must
avoid the capitalist and mercantilist logic that sees the landscape, flora and fauna only
as passive subjects of an anthropic event.
In closing we want to highlight three aspects that are perhaps less impacting but
certainly important to understand certain mechanisms:
the total symbiosis between legislative policies and major works: the law known as Unblock
