Until recently, Jail Ogaden in Ethiopia’s eastern Somali Region housed thousands of prisoners. Torture, rape and death were common in Jail Ogaden. Then the region's new government closed the notorious prison.
After years of being denied access to Ethiopia, Human Rights Watch went back to visit Jail Ogaden to see firsthand the prospects for justice and accountability and how former political prisoners are trying to heal from past abuses.
We spoke with senior researcher Felix Horne about his visit and the now-empty prison, and the Somali region’s path towards healing.
