Stop Unnecessary and Painful Amputations on Dogs — Demand an End to Ear Cropping and Tail Docking Now!

Dear friends,
Tails cut off with scissors or scalpels without using anesthetic. Ears cut up and held upright for months until they heal standing up. This is how owners and breeders mutilate their poor dogs so that they meet the American Kennel Club's (AKC) standards.
Every year, thousands of purebred dogs compete in the Westminster Dog Show. In 2019, a playful Boxer named Wilma won the Working Group category. She performed the tasks she needed to, but she wouldn't have won if most of her tail had not been lopped off and her ears had not been cropped to meet the AKC breed standards.
Over the years, dog breeders and owners have made a lot of different excuses for these horrific amputations. The AKC currently claims that cropping ears prevents ear infections and docking tails prevents tail injuries. But these claims are FALSE. Studies show that the dog breeds most susceptible to ear infections aren't the ones getting their ears cropped. And tail injuries are so rare that hundreds of dogs' tails would have to be docked to prevent just one injury.
The truth is that breeders are putting dogs through unnecessary and painful amputations just to measure up to the AKC's grotesque "beauty" standards. This is especially true for show dogs. Their owners know there is no chance of winning big events like the Westminster Dog Show unless they mutilate their dogs.
As long as our culture dictates that breeders and owners have to get their dogs' ears cropped and tails docked in order for them to be fashionable or even just "normal," nothing will change. Sign the petition demanding that the AKC do its part to end the pain and suffering needlessly experienced by thousands of dogs each year.
Thank you for all that you do,
P.S. Dogs are often only seen as "acceptable" or "beautiful" if they've been surgically mutilated to remove their tails or crop their ears. Speak out to stop this cruelty by signing the petition now!
