It’s High Time
for an #EqualityActJapan

Dear friends,

In July 2021, the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games are slated to begin in Tokyo, Japan.

But today, Japan is not ready to host the Olympics as it doesn’t have any national legislation protecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people from discrimination.

And everyone, including LGBT athletes, should be protected under the law.

Japan’s government has already taken steps to protect LGBT youth in schools. The move came after Human Rights Watch released a 2016 report, The Nail That Sticks Out Gets Hammered Down, on the bullying LGBT kids endured.

But five years later, Japan still has no national law against LGBT discrimination.

The Olympics represents unity in diversity. Now it’s time to capture the momentum of the upcoming Olympic Games. Today, Japanese LGBT activists are nearing a major win—the passing of a law to protect the LGBT community from discrimination. You can help get them to the finish line by taking part in the #EqualityActJapan Campaign.

It’s time for Japan to allow everyone to live safely and openly and for the country to become a global LGBT rights leader. It’s time for an Equality Act.
