THESE INCREDIBLE PHOTOS SHOW WHAT GAY LIFE WAS LIKE IN A 1950s LGBTQ RESORT While it's true that much of the LGBTQ experience in the age before decriminalisation consisted of furtive glances and clandestine meetings, a fascinating new exhibition in New York reminds us that, in some areas at least, gay life was able to flourish out in the open. From May to October, the New-York Historical Society museum is hosting a rare collection of photographs and images documenting life in 1950s and '60s Cherry Grove on New York's Fire Island - an area which has remained a popular LGBTQ retreat ever since. After an already difficult period as a non-English-speaking, closeted, once-famous musical prodigy thrust into the shark tank of the US school system, the expulsion of Vasil's family from the United States just as he was due to head to college sparked a nomadic, international lifestyle for the classically trained singer, who spent time performing opera in London, Toronto and Chicago before returning to his native country three years ago to pursue a pop career.
