Nearly 50 people this morning forced the interruption of work on the ground where
the company Ray-Mont Logistiques plans to build a huge transshipment platform, bysettling in the middle of the machinery to establish a makeshift camp. ---- Text
from the Contrepoints website. Link to the original, here . ---- Located east of
Viau Avenue, this land abandoned by industries for several years is now inhabited
in all kinds of ways by the people of the neighborhood, invigorated by flora and
fauna that contrast with the asphalt and concrete that surround it. While the CAQ
would like to see the emergence of an industrial-port zone and an increase in the
transport of goods, we oppose the destruction of one of the last non-merchandised
and green spaces in the east of the island. Whether it is to build a highway
ramp, a Hydro-Quebec substation or a transshipment platform. This vacant lot,
which was a place of life for many marginalized people until their violent
expulsion last spring, is for many
As part of the CAQ's maritime strategy "Avantage Saint-Laurent", the
transshipment platform proposed by Ray-Mont Logistique is aligned with numerous
projects aiming to make the St. Lawrence River a "freight highway", allowing to
further increase international trade, and thereby contribute to accelerating the
exploitation and destruction of the territory. We can think of the Port of
Montreal expansion project in the city of Contrecoeur, the LNG Quebec project in
the so-called Saguenay - Lac-Saint-Jean, the Laurentia project, now abandoned due
to major disputes, "East Coastal Innovation Zone" in Quebec City, and much more.
These projects have in common to reduce the territory and the waterways that
cross it to its market value,
Whether the Ray-Mont Logistics project has the approval of the government and the
municipality or not, we will continue to occupy this space, we will continue to
pose as an obstacle to its destruction and we will continue to harm, by all means
possible. our reach, destroying the ecosystems and territories we inhabit.
To those who are tired of letting concrete and machinery dictate the frantic
pursuit of a world that is on the verge of ruin, this is a call to organize and
join together to oppose solidarity, the common and the struggle against
capitalist and colonial devastation.
