Faced with the well-established organization of multinational industries and the
avoidance strategies of local public authorities, collectives fighting for thedefense of forests are coming together for a more effective response. ---- At theend of 2019, a mega-plant project was initiated by the transnational groupFlorian in Lannemezan in the Hautes-Pyrénées. It aims to continue theindustrialization of French forests and to produce 50,000 m³ of beech lumber byemptying the forests of its oldest trees. ---- A disaster for forests which arealready under strong pressure from clear cuts and other industrial sawmills. IfFlorian manages to get his project accepted, 500,000 m 3 of wood will be pulledfrom the forests each year[1]. Such a volume of timber presupposes internationaltrade and therefore additional road traffic. This project at the indecent cost of11 million euros is financed up to 60% by the State and the region, to createonly 25 precarious and dangerous jobs. But for the local industrial fabric and inparticular the Fiber Excellence paper factory, located 30 km away and which hasbeen seeking for years to reduce its wood supply radius, this mega-factory is timely.Faced with the establishment of the sawmill, the Touche pas à ma forêt (TPMF)collective was created in 2020 and has since led regular mobilizations that bringtogether several hundred people. The collective, very dynamic last year in thePyrenees, is made up of associations, elected officials (LFI, EELV and PCF) andtrade unionists, mainly SNUPFEN[2], the majority union of the National Office ofForests.Following the mobilizations of TPMF and the filing of appeals, the prefecturesuspended the project to launch a consultation process. The prefect has asked tocarry out individual audits with all the players involved in the subject, andwill return his copy during December-January. But despite the militantinvestment, the region decided to slyly launch another 70 hectare sawmill-factoryproject in the Tarn at Mazamet!Go beyond the logic of urgencyFaced with the proliferation of useless and imposed projects, the logic ofemergency, if it can prevent construction sites locally, does not allow aneffective fight for the defense of forests.Faced with this observation, on August 2, 2021 the Call for living forests islaunched. Today, it brings together 21 structures, in particular CGT Forêt,SNUPFEN and naturalist associations. If the strategy must be fine-tuned duringthe coming year, the coordination is already proposing to operate by season: inthe fall of weekends of action in each local group, in winter an assembly ofstruggles to think long and hard. -term, and in the spring a nonviolent action ona single place. A hope for TPMF, who would like the spring action to take placein Lannemezan.This national coordination seems to go beyond the previous union frameworks: itis a question of coordination between naturalists, associations and unions whichis not only formal, as has been the case in the past.
