In this time that the extreme right, the anti-vaccine movements and other
protesters brandish the word "freedom" to justify their positions, it may beuseful to return to the meaning of this word. ---- Vaccination is not recent, butthe result of science and long-standing research. Science is not somethingimmobile, frozen, but is, in itself, the result of the most recent advances andconsensus. ---- The messenger RNA also does not date from yesterday. Discoveredin 1961, its use does not begin with Covid. ---- Although humans can becorrupted, the scientific consensus tends to avoid the instrumentalization ofscience by relying on reproducible proofs. For us anarchists, science must beused to move towards progress, which is inherent in thinking collectively aboutits use.It is interesting to note that many scientists have little to do with boundaries,property, and thus share their research and discoveries. Then there are theprivate interests of companies ... in our world, the capitalist system takes holdof scientific progress (technical, technological, etc.) and makes it to thebenefit of only a part of the population, is one of its principles.Capitalism is the pillaging!It is in this sense that freedom and science should be linked: the notion offreedom encompasses in its initial sense an identical condition for everyone.This notion therefore implies raising the question of the organization of societyso that freedom does not become a license.If being free meant living without taking the other into account, it would benecessary to have the greatest possible power to be so. In this sense, only thosewho lead others would be free since they themselves would not have to obeyanyone. Then no one would be truly free.This approach that assumes contempt for others is called license , it is anabsence of freedom. The term license is precisely the result of a society inwhich power reigns: "I do what I want without worrying about others" is aquestion of license and not freedom.Anarchism is committed to freedom and not licenseFreedom is understood as a social balance taking into account the whole of whatis alive. In it individuality is concerned as well as collectivity, and it isthat we must distinguish individuality from individualism. While individuality isconjugated with collectivity, individualism only works through the rejection ofit. For the rest, individualism is fundamental to the capitalist system and itspowers, political and employer.For capitalism, it is so much the selfish consumer enjoyment to be filled,"whatever it takes", humanly, economically, ecologically. For the other two,there are so many individuals who do not play collectively that then both thebosses can crush them and the State put under its authoritarian control.The license implies, then, the loss of freedom of all and all, since it is builtopposing each other, each other.The current climate of mistrust, caused by the confusion and the attitude of therulers, is not strange. The conspiratorial tendencies that emanate from thisclimate play the game of governments, since they go in the direction of thelicense , and thus, of "let everyone scratch with their nails" of power.To speak of freedom to justify its anti-vaccine position is, therefore,paradoxical. In effect, the question of the freedom of the other not to becontaminated, to want the epidemic to recede and, with it, the measures ofrestriction is put into play .In our opinion it is too easy to advocate for a freedom (which is nothing morethan a license ); take the license not to get vaccinated, not to act, having theimpression that this does not put oneself or others at risk. This "non-choice"is, however, choosing not to take into account scientific advances related topublic health, not to take others into account and, thus, to make others and,incidentally, take risks for oneself. Also take the risk of not going in thedirection of the regression of the virus and thus continue to see our freedomsdenied for a longer time.The creation of the health pass, the last offspring of the State's sticks,reflects our inability to organize ourselves in a collective, solidary andmaterialistic way, even in times of crisis. It is urgent that we assume ourresponsibilities, preventing them from being imposed on us. That opens the doorto other authoritarian drifts. Since in the absence of responsibility, the placecomes to be occupied by the State, authoritarian by nature. It is also the returnto beliefs and all its drifts: magical thinking, search for a culprit, eugenics,anti-progressive drifts, anti-science ...We are not anarchists for liking chaos. We are anarchists because for usemancipation is at the heart of everything. It is unacceptable that only thewealthiest can heal, have access to vaccines, scientific knowledge and canrediscover a "normal life."
