If you can afford it, bring along items such as sleeping bags,warm clothes, (vegan) food and snacks. ---- Sterrebos at VDL Nedcar occupied byforest protectors ---- A group of environmentalists occupied the Sterrebos nearBorn (Limburg) early this morning. They climbed the trees with ropes and settledthere in hammocks. The action is organized to protect the forest against theplanned felling by car factory VDL Nedcar. VDL Nedcar wants to set up a newproduction line on the site of the ancient forest. The forest protectors call forthe plan to be adjusted so that the forest is preserved.A group of environmentalists occupied the Sterrebos near Born (Limburg) earlythis morning. They climbed the trees with ropes and settled there in hammocks.The action is organized to protect the forest against the planned felling by carfactory VDL Nedcar. VDL Nedcar wants to set up a new production line on the siteof the ancient forest. The forest protectors call for the plan to be adjusted sothat the forest is preserved.One of the forest protectors says: "Demonstrations have been organized, petitionshanded out and discussions held, but VDL Nedcar has shown that it only caresabout maximum profit. This forest, the bats and other animals, they don't care.They choose the cheapest option. VDL pretends that the Sterrebos is stoppingthousands of jobs, but that is nonsense. We are for trees and jobs, and above allfor a future for everyone!"The dozens of activists dressed as bats come from all over the country, includingthe province of Limburg. They have united under the name "Save the Sterrebos" andare affiliated with various climate and environmental action groups. Theactivists say they were inspired by successful forest occupations in Germany, andcloser in Schinveld (2005-2006), which saved 14 hectares of forest.The Council of State discussed the various objections to the felling on 13January, including proceedings on the merits and a preliminary injunction fromSEVON and the Groene Sporenwolf. Although no decision has been made yet, VDL mayalready start with preparatory work and move plants and shrubs. As long as thereare people in the trees, the forest cannot be cut down. The activists want toprevent irreversible damage with the occupation and therefore intend to stayuntil the preservation of the Sterrebos is guaranteed.The Sterrebos is a unique, quiet, wild forest. As it is not maintained and notopen to the public, it is an ideal refuge for roe deer, badgers, bats andbreeding birds. Many of the trees, especially oaks, are over 200 years old.VDLNedcar is obliged to plant new trees for the felling of the forest. The forestguards say: "An old forest like Sterrebos cannot be compensated. It will take atleast another hundred years before a compensation forest has the same value asthe current forest. We don't have that time. We must now combat climate changeand restore biodiversity. Cutting down an old forest for the profit of a carfactory is at odds with that. "Save the Sterrebos calls on local residents and nature lovers to come and helpwith the occupation.
