A new report out this week should be a wake-up call for governments around the world. The research shows that children with disabilities often face increased risk of harm during armed conflict and crises. They can have difficulty fleeing attacks and face abandonment, barriers to education and basic services, lack of assistive devices, and harm to their mental health. Since 2015, Human Rights Watch has documented this impact on children with disabilities in Afghanistan, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Gaza Strip in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, South Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. You can read many of their stories in this new report. Despite decades of UN and international progress protecting children in armed conflict, children with disabilities have for too long been forgotten. That needs to change now. |
