Since February 24, the start of the Russian military intervention in Ukraine,
expressions of solidarity have multiplied across the world towards Ukrainianrefugees. As always, war brings with it its macabre procession of deaths andpopulations forced to flee bombs, abuses and carnage. The imperialist war of theRussian state is no exception. ---- Unlike other wars, the States of Europe, andespecially the neighboring countries, open their borders to welcome those who bythe hundreds of thousands flee the Ukrainian cities bombarded by the Russianarmy. But the dominant French discourse in the media reminds us that there are"good and bad refugees". Our revulsion is total when a journalist from BFMTVventures to say "We are not talking here about Syrians who are fleeing thebombings of the regime (...). We're talking about Europeans driving off in theircars that look like our cars and just trying to save their lives." or whenJean-Louis Bourlanges, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee at the NationalAssembly, rejoices with racist condescension that France welcomes "high-qualityimmigration, from which we can take advantage".A two-speed solidarityWe are outraged by the cynicism of the public authorities who are mobilizing asnever before, promising to open reception places, care and free transport forUkrainian refugees, while these measures have been demanded for decades by allassociations, political organizations and trade unions placing themselves in thecamp of unconditional solidarity with undocumented people and refugees, whereverthey come from. This double standard, we see it without surprise also carried bythe mayoress of Calais who welcomes the Ukrainians with open arms, whilesupporting a ruthless policy towards migrants who seek to reach Great Britain (afew weeks earlier a squat opened to shelter refugees was evacuated by the RAID).This variable-geometry solidarity illustrates systemic racism and the entrenchedcolonial mentality among those who dare to claim to represent humanist values.Part of the media and political field no longer even hides behind anypseudo-economic discourse clearly preferring these refugees perceived as "white".The expression of state racismThese decisions also seek to make people forget a five-year period of everstronger contempt and racism exercised against migrant populations. Barely 20% ofasylum applications receive a positive response and Afghan refugees are stillbeing held in CRA detention (Ehsan, a young Afghan and asylum seeker, detained"completely illegally" - InfoMigrants).If the war of the Russian state in Ukraine is indeed an imperialist war waged bya mafia, nationalist and racist power, we must not close our eyes to the realityof liberal democracies. The latter are multiplying anti-social measures andcriminalizing immigrants using far-right rhetoric on a European scale.For the unconditional welcome of all refugeesFor us, Libertarian Communist Union, the unconditional welcome of refugees fromUkraine cannot be different from that which we demand for all migrants residingon French territory. It is imperative to put this unconditional andindiscriminate welcome on the agenda, and to set up permanent receptionstructures, facilitating daily life, such as free public transport for all. yourrefugees demanded by our comrades in the railway unions. It is also imperative todenounce the situation of non-white people wishing to flee Ukraine, currentlyheld up at the borders and whose future is just as uncertain, Europeananti-migrant policies, making us fear the worst.
